Why are Northern allowed to cancel Sunday Services seemingly at will?

17.19 from Lime Street was earlier showing as cancelled due to a shortage of conductors.

That eventually ran but left 4 mins late.

Then the 18.19 was cancelled due to a shortage of drivers and remained cancelled!

P.S. absolutely pathetic from the amateurs at Northern!

Even the Virgin Trains staff on platform 9 at Lime Street were having a good old laugh at Northern Fail!

Was sat on the 20.26 from Lime Street to Oxford Rd half an hour ago and it was announced the train was cancelled with no reason given.

Currently sat in the Crown Hotel pub having a swift half and will attempt to get the 20.55!!!

This thread has been all about cancellations on Sundays, yet there are still a similar amount of cancellations on a weekday, so who can we blame that on? Traincrew again, for not working every rest day under the sun?

Having to take Drivers off booked jobs to do Traction training on new units. Also, cancellations when a new type of traction is introduced, due to the Driver not yet signing the traction. Add sickness to that and then there's a real shortage.

Cancellations on weekdays are nowhere near as many as Sundays, at least as a % of the total services.

More crew shortage, 17:56 Leeds to Skipton cancelled and the XC 16.21 Sheffield to Edinburgh delayed by 30 mins due to shortage of drivers.

Seems to be a common theme with Arriva?

So this Sundays cancellations are (drum roll please)

  • Wigan - Stalybridge: Rail replacement buses will be in place between Wigan and Bolton and between Manchester Victoria and Stalybridge.
  • Lancaster – Morecambe: Rail replacement service will be in place between Lancaster and Morecambe
  • Liverpool South Parkway – Manchester Airport express service will not be running. Customers can use alternative train services on that route. Please note that Liverpool Lime Street is closed this weekend for Network Rail signalling upgrade.
How long is this going to continue? We all know for a fact that they will be more cancellations than the ones announced due to shortage of staff

The inability to plug these supposed 'planned' and the additional 'unplanned' cancellations effectively means you have to presume there is no service at all on the relevant route.

I have just had to make that call in terms of getting from Warrington to Liverpool.

As a side point, why are Virgin not running to Liverpool South Parkway this weekend? They could have positioned a Voyager to run a Crewe - South Parkway shuttle so they had something to fit on the platforms at South Parkway.

I would very much doubt there is spare capacity in the Voyager fleet especially on Sunday afternoons.

Is it not the case that, on such a journey on Sundays, as you describe above, Arriva North West service 7 from Warrington bus interchange to Liverpool Queen Square bus station runs every 30 minutes, so you are not exactly stranded in Warrington

I have not claimed to be stranded in Warrington.

I, for one, didn't understand what you meant when you said the following.
Well there is a paragraph before it to help you with this difficult task. The call I have made, very simply, is not to trust the train between Warrington and Liverpool South Parkway today because of planned and unplanned cancellations.

It is a similar call I made earlier this morning not to trust the train between Wigan and Southport. That is a call I have been having to make for months now on Sundays.

The end game is to get to Hall Road station.

All you had to do was check NRE for example and check if there are any cancellations, all services between Wigan & Southport have ran today (up until 1538 dep ex-Southport) and then make a judgement based on that.

I can see why the absence of the semi-fast service is a loss for you, since it would have made a comfortable connection at South Parkway with the Southport service. The stopper makes a most uncomfortable connection at Hunts Cross, and on at least one occasion today, the connection would not have been made.

I'm mindful of the fact that, whenever trains from the CLC route are (for whatever reason) unable to reach Lime Street, Northern is quick to point out the existence of the Merseyrail service. That's of limited value if the services are not going to connect.
