Having received lots of messages asking for tips on DMI etc following my successful one, I’ve decided that I would put up the list of questions I made up of literally everything I thought I could be asked. Everything I was asked, was on this list, others feel free to add, it’s just a guideline to help others prepare.

- Why do you want to join the company?
- Why do you think you are suitable for the job?
- What does the company do?
- What does a Train Driver do?
- What is the geographical range of the companies services?
- Describe a time you have dealt with a problem
- Describe a time you have dealt with a problem with a superior
- Describe a time you have dealt with an emergency situation
- Describe your biggest achievement
- Describe a time you have had to persevere to achieve something
- Describe a time you have worked alone for long periods of time
- Give an example of staying calm under pressure
- Describe a time you have had to follow strict rules and regulations
- Describe a time you have used organisational skills
- How do you maintain concentration for long periods and stop yourself getting bored
- Example of a time you have assisted a member of the public/gone above and beyond
- Example of a stressful experience and how you dealt with it
- How do you manage fatigue
- Describe a time you have had to study
- What would you expect to say over a tannoy
- Describe a time you have made a mistake and how it was resolved
- Describe a time you have had to motivate a colleague
- Describe a time you have noticed a colleagues standards or techniques slipping and what you did about it
- Describe a time you took on a task with incomplete instructions
- What are your views on Trade Unions?
- Why do you want to be a Train Driver?
- What are the qualities of a Train Driver?
- Do you think a Train Driver should wear a uniform?
- Describe a time you have worked unsocial hours/shift work
- What are the aims of the TOC?
- What challenges are the TOC facing

how did you feel best to answer these questions? in STAR format?? did you find it helpful just to bulletproof a few key facts to remember for each question?? great post BTW.... many thanks. Also, did you find that they wanted much information on the company itself rather than answers to competency based questions? I remember failing for GTR because I elaborated on the company too much and those parts were not considered scoring questions? did your particular TOC have a set of scoring non - scoring questions?? any help appreciated, as you can probably tell I have DMI coming up!!! cheers

To be honest, I think only you can determine what’s the best way for you, you don’t want to come across as a robot with rehearsed answers, you’re speaking to a human who you want to see your personality first and foremost, I didn’t necessarily prepare answers as such for each question, I just had an idea what things I would talk about if I was asked that particular question, I’m lucky enough to have had very good relevant experiences with previous employment, so that helped. In regards to talking about the TOC, I was given free reign, I was literally asked ‘what do you know about the company?’. I just talked about how it was made up, who runs the show, what the company expects to deliver, aims for the future and then I was stopped pretty much! I expected to have to know more than I did, but you really don’t, because anyone can reel of facts found on google, I think they just want to know you’ve taken the time to actually have a look, shows a certain amount of genuine interest in the job. Ultimately the DMI is very relaxed and they are just there to get a feel for you and whether you’re suitable for the role!

Thanks again for taking the time out with such a lenghtly response, with regards to my 1ST DMI it sounds very similar in terms of what you need to know about the company so I'll remember that this time... Last time I tried to remember too much but it just needs to be short and accurate. Cheers

Thanks Lewis for the time and effort you have put into creating that list, a really handy thing you have done there. In researching for my upcoming DMI there are one or two questions I had not thought about so thank you.

Across my DMI and my MMI, I was asked all of them in one way or another except there was nothing asked about Unions. I expect that in the current climate, depending on what TOC you are going for, that maybe a more prominent question.

Thanks mate. It just looks like a hell of a lot of questions when the MMI is only six :(

Thanks for the positive words! And yes my focus is on the interview even though it is at very short notice. I got offered the interview spot yesterday afternoon after someone else dropped out, which hasn't left an awful lot time to prepare :o However its nearly 2 years since I applied for the job so I will be giving it my best shot

Although political views/membership are not a protected characteristic, I think you'd be on incredibly thin ice to start asking about such things in an interview.
