Is this actually news or is the work to get them to fit something that was planned in from the beginning?

(I agree the trains should be 120m single units)

It seems Abellio are very poor at learning lessons and are making very similar mistakes to what they have on Greater Anglia in relation to trains not fitting in platforms.

Would be curious how much input the operations team had on the new stock....

Yes I believe Merseytravel have bought them, which leads me to ask the question - why? Are there any other PTEs or similar which have bought the trains that operate within their area?
Because they don't want to be bled dry by a ROSCO for the next forty years?
The Class 483s demonstrate the pitfalls of renting trains.

Isn't that (partly or wholly) because the delays in opening crossrail have left TfL with a gap in their budget?
Whatever its a costly way to raise a bit of extra cash!

I think the decision to sale and lease back was made in the first part of 2018, but the announcement that it wouldn't open on time took place in the second half of the year. The reason given for the sale was to raise money for new trains for the deep tube lines.

Ah yes that does sound like something I'd read or heard... Apologies I stand corrected!

Still seems a bit odd - why not lease the new deep tube line trains instead?

The 345s were already built and partly delivered, which meant a great deal of risk had already passed.

That meant TfL got a super sweet leasing deal on them. The deal is also time-limited whereupon ownership will revert.

So they've just essentially mortgaged units that they paid for upfront?

The reason that Merseytravel have bought the trains is that the financing costs are cheaper. Being a public body they can get better terms and save money rather than pay a ROSCO. Not trains but I presume similar financing was carried out to provide the trams in West Midlands and Manchester.
