Severe overhead wire damage following a dewirement north of the station. No diverts possible on this stretch replacement buses are operating between York and Newcastle from around 14:30.

Newcastle Thunderbird is en-route to the area

Seems a bit odd to describe it as the "Strensall area", Strensall is on the Scarborough line so there are no wires there. It's a good 5 or 6 miles away from the ECML.

I think it is at Overton near Skelton, just north of York on the ECML where the wires are down.

Apparently the fire brigade are on route according to local media.

I'm on 1Y32 where we are awaiting a Doncaster Thunderbird to drag us into York, where the train will be terminated due to pantograph damage.
LNER have referred on Twitter to a train having OHLE wrapped round the train.

Looking on Traksy, there's a couple of Cross Country voyagers stuck behind 1Y32 at Skelton Junction, one of them being Aberdeen to Penzance train, 1E13 Inverness-Kings Cross stuck at Tollerton Junction, 1A65 Sunderland-Kings Cross has managed to cross over, & gone back to Thirsk

From local media:
There are problems on the East Coast Main Line again affecting TPE, CrossCountry, Grand Central and LNER.
The power cables have been damaged at Overton, north of York and Minster FM has been told the Fire service has been brought in to help deal with the incident.

Network Rail says:

We’re sorry that there’s significant disruption to the East Coast Main Line near York.

This is because of damage to the overhead line equipment between Skelton Bridge and Skelton Junction in the Overton area.

Our response teams are on site and prioritising getting passengers moving again as soon as possible.

At this stage disruption is expected for several hours.

Passengers should check with National Rail Enquiries or with their train operators before travelling.

An investigation is now underway to find out what happened.

Services will be delayed, amended and cancelled.

More information on trains affected is here

We have just been told by the conductor that the cable is actively wrapped around the rear half of our train 1Y32.
The emergency services are checking it is not live, draining residual current, climbing on top of the train and removing the cable.

Carnage at Darlington when I passed through off the Saltburn line at about 15.10 Displaced passengers everywhere. RTT suggests things are getting better here but not seeing much action out of a window overlooking the ECML

We're apparently expecting to be dragged into York starting about 1630. Until then we're blocking all lines.
Presumably after that they will have to make the OHLE safe for passage of other trains, before the ECML can be reopened.

Any trains stuck this time?

I would hope that OLE staff are doing that, not the emergency services!

I would hazard a guess that one or more headspans are down between Skelton and Skelton Bridge.

It is the OLE staff. They arrived on scene not long ago.

Looks like 1V89 and 1V 60 are moving if the maps on Opentraintimes are right.

Is this good news for some diesel movements later

1E13 (07:55 Inverness to London King's Cross) seems to be heading Northbound now. I wonder if that set will go to Newcastle and become 1W96?

Now arrived at Darlington where, I suspect, passengers are being detrained for bussing southwards.

Why are TPE so bad at dealing with disruption? Ok I know it is always more complicated than it appears to Joe Public like myself. Staffing would seem the main problem (drivers needing breaks, staff needing to end up at the right places at end of service) as units should be available to run either side of the disruption.
Are TPE particularly bad or would any TOC struggle? Having contingency timetables for main parts of their route ready to go would seem like one option.

HST just left Newcastle at 17:05 for Inverness. Power car 43316 at rear with set EC51 if that helps anyone identify where that set was earlier.

Would you care to go into detail with regards to this incident ?
The 1st post about disruption was at 1427. What do you expect them to do and why target TPE when Cross Country & LNERare also disrupted ?
