I suppose if they contain ancient lift machinery and switchgear the top bit could well be a lot larger in size than we’d expect today?Looks like a lift motor room building
There are 2 of these at Newcastle Central Station. One between platforms 1 & 2 and one between 3 & 4.
Am I right in assuming that they were shunting/ dispatching boxes in steam days?View attachment 71851
There’s also a third structure in the far left background of your picture.
Lift shafts with the lift motors and control gear on the top above the lift shaft. The subway below was connected to the building behind on the river side that used to be the Post office sorting centre, all that was before the the Post Office Depot was built where the electric trains run to at Gateshead side as you head towards Newcastle on the train. At the Scarborough end of platform 2-4 at York you will also find similar lifts ( now out of use ) the used to access the Post Office sorting depot below in Leeman Road. Back in days of post by rail these lifts moved a lot of mail barrows loaded with mail between sorting office and trains at all times of the day and night.
Thanks for the info on York - I was stretching my legs before heading to London on the platform the other week and came across those lift shafts and wondered where they were for. Had guesses at the post office over the fence, but nice to get it confirmed. Wonder if there is still access from the post office end.....
