And the answer pretty much is no!
They will no doubt pair them up for the Grand National and other major events in Liverpool.

They will find the extra units by cancelling Ellesmere Port and New Brighton services as usual.

There will still be paired workings on the Southport and Ormskirk lines, without a doubt. No way of getting around the peak time loads on these routes: they are much busier than the West Kirby line.

Only once the issues preventing paired 777s on certain routes are sorted, of course!

The argument is I believe that they will be both quicker (and so take a couple of minutes off each run) and more reliable. But we've heard that before.
Would any account be taken of a reduction in reliability over the years? They should (might/hopefully/fingers crossed) be very reliable now but in 10 to 20 years time? If more trains need maintenance what happens then? Just a hypothetical question really...

They can't order more trains now because reliability may decline in several decades time, though it really shouldn't. A mid-life overhaul should address any age related issues that crop up.

Yes, but the mid-life overhaul itself takes a unit out of service for some time, potentially leading to shortages, and extra demands on the rest of the stock. You can't plan for the future expecting 'best case scenario' every day from entering service to final withdrawal without risking being "bitten on the bum" a few times!

Same goes for any resource. I once worked for an employer who announced that the team could easily cope with any workload, because there was a restriction that only two members of staff could be absent at any time for any reason. The following summer (note summer - peak Annual Leave request time) - we had three staff on maternity leave. Oops.

Of course, that's why this and any other order has spare units for maintenance etc but nobody buys extra trains specifically because of a mid-life overhaul in 20-ish years time.

The 777s will have MUCH better acceleration so should save more than a couple of minutes on the longer routes. This might free up a couple of units compared to 507/508 and with any luck higher reliability will mean fewer in maintenance each day. It does look tight but I am looking forward to sampling the acceleration of the 777s.

C3+ Overhaul at the moment.
What does this type of overhaul involve and the average time the overhaul takes?
I heard that they have stopped C4 overhauls of the current fleet, what other types of overhauls would take place in the final few months/year of the 507/508s?

Overhauls still continuing.

C3, same as C4, plus work above solebar too.

Can take 1-2 months.

Read something somewhere that only 50 of the 52 ordered units will be required because of the performance enhancements, whether that includes doubled-up services I'm not aware
