Mapperley Tunnel Explore

Hey guys

We recently got an oppertunity to have a look inside Mapperley Railway Tunnel in Nottinghamshire.

This is part of the former GNR line as many of you will know, and is in poor condition and maybe not long left for this world.

We took half a dozen high powered lights in and made a short video, link above or below

It's surprised me how this tunnel has always been pretty easy to get in to despite being in a pretty dangerous state, whilst other pretty benign tunnels are protected with fortress-like measures.

I explored it a few years ago when it was completely unfenced and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, even if the poor condition of the tunnel made it a little hair-raising at times!

Not really, Mansfield Road and Sherwood Rise tunnels are generally fairly well sealed, with one end of each being infilled and only accessible via manholes. Because of this one also has to consider the possibility of bad air in these tunnels as they are effectively unventilated.

Like most disused tunnels, one could strike lucky by turning up at the right time, in other words after someone else has developed a means of entry but before the powers that be have closed it up again. I'd say the chances of this for these two tunnels is pretty low however.
