Hi

Is there anywhere I can check if I can split an off peak return to save? All the splitting apps I have tried seem to come up with options with advance tickets but I need off peak flexibility. Thanks.

Some of them do have a flexible mode

Which have you tried so far?

It may be that a through ticket is cheaper than splitting, I have found this to be the case several times.

Trainsplit.com certainly has the option to force it to show only flexible tickets. It's on the search results screen rather than the initial screen where you enter your journey requirements.

Very true! It is often cheaper to split on walk-ups but no means always. If the OP were willing to share some details about their proposed journey we may be able to assist further ;)

Splitting on flexible tickets can also be useful where there is a cheap operator specific ticket available for part but not all of the journey.

Especially if it's an off-peak return they want rather than a day return

I find this is more often the case than not on the routes I use, I mostly only get savings if I select the Advance option. This is probably because WCML Off Peak Returns are relatively low-priced compared with elsewhere on the network for historical reasons, namely that VT just after privatisation abolished SuperSavers and reduced the Savers to an average of the two, then that fare became regulated and therefore could not be increased later beyond the fixed formula.

Bristol TM to Crewe. I'll try trainsplit.com
If you're going via Birmingham, then for the second part of your journey you should look into Birmingham-Stafford and Stafford-Crewe as a combination as well as Birmingham-Crewe as a single ticket because they're all priced by LBR West Midlands Trains. These tend to be much cheaper than flows priced by Cross Country.
