Hi all - me again!

I'm looking at booking a return journey for 2 adults no railcard (and a 4 year old) from WOP to BIT on Sunday 23/02/2020 (first day of WOP being open... hopefully!).

I have tried to check fares through NRE website but keeps coming back as error. I know it needs a change at Oxford and trainsplit is showing as 2 return tickets splitting at Oxford. Any idea why there doesn't seem to be functionality through NRE?

Keep getting this page:

Oh no! There has been an error
What's the problem?
There's a problem which we are currently working on.

What can I do about it?

Hi,

Regarding NRE.

I’ve had problems with it for ages. That site crashes more than I eat!

Latest was yesterday. I wanted to check the time of a journey from Leasowe to Chester, obvious route via Birkenhead Hamilton Square, perfectly valid with my Saveaway.

NRE showed a list of tickets I could buy with drop down boxes on who to buy the ticket from which seemed random. (I didn’t want the ticket only the times).

I was surprised though to see NRE hammering the Via Bidston/Shotton ticket at about five times the price of the Saveaway and even a single. Really!

The saveaway is not valid on Tfw beyond Upton AFAIK, certainly not all the way to Shotton/Chester. (A single Via BKQ isn’t that dear.)

I went back to try and get a screenshot but now all I get it the classic 404 buffer stops.

Best to stick to TOC sites it seems. Maybe one day NR will sort it.

Saperstein.

I did try GWR as well but it kept just juddering and would not show the times/fares... grrr.

On reflection I think BIT is a bit of a trek for a day... from what I hear it's just full of overpriced things (not like my type of outlet store in Florida!). Think a day in Oxford is more like it :)

I think what may be happening is that NRE's front end is sending a request to their back end. It then waits a bit, and redirects you to that web page if it doesn't find anything.

By the way, a family or two together railcard would save £13.40 on the journey just to Oxford. It's only worth it if you expect more rail journeys this year, but it wouldn't take many of them.

With Chester-Leasowe, someone decided (in 2018, I think) to change the fares between Chester and stations west of Birkenhead from "any permitted" to a mix of "via Birkenhead" and "via Hooton". It can sometimes be faster via Shotton, but you can't use a Chester-Leosowe ticket to go that way now, much less a Saveaway.

The tickets are all "any permitted" from Wrexham, if you ever need to go that way.
