There are literally dozens of Yahoogroups gen groups, not just the ones you mention.

Plus, of course, the TOPS request thread on this forum.

I tend to get mine direct from TRUST, TOPS or Genius or via someone else with access when I can't.

Would you be able to tell me how you access TRUST, TOPS or Genius? Many thanks.

Work for the Railway and get yourself a job which gives you access to the systems. Seriously, the systems are for internal use only and not in the public domain. There are many posts across the Forum where this or similar has been asked.

Why aren’t a lot of data sources such as Genius, TRUST and the sectional appendices in the public domain? Is it so that Network Rail can sell access rights to companies/websites such as RTT for a load of money?

If CrossCountry were answering this they’d say that it’s for security reasons.

For clarification, websites like RTT, Railcam, etc. don't pay anything to access any of the data feeds that
they use - they are all completely free to use and the vast majority of the data is in the public domain,
which is why they are called "open" data feeds.

The only restriction, if you want to call it that, is that a fair degree of coding knowledge/skill is required
to be able to process, store and display the data from the feeds in a readable format.

what industry do you work in? Is every bit of information there in the public domain?

Shame. It would be interesting if on websites showing live departures there was a feature that showed the consist like what is found with NS

The open data community is eagerly awaiting this information to become populated on the various platforms that already support it - the data is just not being populated from the internal systems that clearly have the information available.

There is next to no* need for consist information to be hidden behind a lock and key. Three train operators so far have agreed with me. There are more coming. My intentions is that once it's been demonstrated that enough has been done then some nudges can be started to be made to get the rest of it all as open data. However, this data is locked away inside certain systems in such a way that it is really hard to get out if some TOCs have done certain things.

Some of the other data in Genius is operationally sensitive and that's fine.

* the exceptions are along the lines of, for example, for freight actual wagon numbers, whether they're loaded or not, etc. I've had several discussions about this and I'm in general agreement with a few operators that this data is commercially sensitive, not so much operational.

No - I’m a student. The point I’m making is that you need to have certified credentials to login to a lot of these services, so that normally means being an employee.

Example for Genius:
That's because Genius gives access to private and/or commercially sensitive information such as
traincrew diagrams/rosters; I am sure that other 'locked down' services are similar.
