The Southport Champion was of course only printing what Merseytravel said at the time. Had the 777s even been ordered in 2017?
They were ordered in December 2016 with deliveries in mid 2019 and entering service in 2020. The first one was delivered to the UK in Jan 2020 which while later than intended isn't terrible, its difficult to compare from there due to covid.

I remember seeing 777003 in the shed at Kirkdale in January 2020 when passing on the Ormskirk line. If it is true about the RMT then next will be ASLEF and after that there will be no obstacle to them entering service.

'Someone' at Merseytravel suggested this year which could be 31st December for all we know. Until the parties involved get 'agreements' into place, then Class 777's are not going anywhere other than training / ecs runs! In the meantime, you still have over 35 more Class 777's still to be delivered and it has been sometime since the last one was delivered to the UK.

May be by the time the Class 777's are finally introduced, the additional work required (eg Southport Station platforms) may have been completed and there fore may not need to keep the proposed 10 Class 507's to cover that diagram!
It was actually 14 x Class 507s to be kept on an extended lease, the individual sets being identified. However, circumstances and the wear and tear on that 14 during the extended delay in getting the 777s into traffic may well have changed plans.

Will this thread make it to 100 pages before the first example enters commercial service?!

Hope not, I'd love some air conditioning by the time the end of spring comes, especially as they have no opening windows

It will if I make any suggestion that their introduction will help with the reopening of the Burscough Curves!

Why does it matter that they have no opening windows if you can’t go on them? The 507/508s still have opening windows.

507/508 windows open (barely!) but it makes bugger all difference in summer until you get to the tunnels.

They were fine before the blocks were added to limit opening so people wouldn't chuck the seat cushions etc out or stick their arms out (though I don't think I ever saw anyone do the latter on the 50x, it was usual to see a line of discarded seat cushions alongside the line).

I was just about to say this. They were much better before they fitted the blocks!

You can still see the odd (badly rotten) unrefurbished seat seat cushion on the track side

Which is ironic as the same refurbishment made it much harder to remove the seats anyway!

I’ve seen people get up and open them just and they were going into the tunnel!

I was about to say that the fact the old seat cushions were made in the 1970s suggests to me they will be synthetic and not bio-degradeable, so any that were not retrieved before the refurbishment will still be there. Do you know the locations of any of these cushions or where to look for them along the line, especially as it’s winter and they won’t be obscured by vegetation?

I've only been doing short journeys to Chester lately, the only one I've noticed is on the approach to Chester on the right hand side next to the Brook Lane road bridge. It's facing down and appears the fabric has rotted away and only the foam remains. I've definitely seen plenty of others around but I can't confirm where.

I did find one next to the council carpark fence in West Kirby last year and had a prod at it with a stick. Still had some fabric on it but very holey!

So are there more of them on the Wirral? That would explain why I haven’t noticed them.

There are quite a few more, I just can't remember exactly where! I will keep an eye out on my travels. There are definitely a few scattered between Bebington and Hooton.

I've not seen any before, but I think with travelling on the West Kirby branch any old seats may have been cleared up when they did the lineside clearances before the Open in Hoylake.

Never underestimate idiots, God will just find a way to invent a better idiot. It's probably why the 777 seats are even more utilitarian than the current ones.

One of the new trains for Merseyrail just passed through Freshfield station. I assume this is a test run of some sort.

Thanks for the links. I’ve just been having a look at that site.
There’s a train on it marked FRGT, which I assume means freight. Given this line is not normally used for freight would this be the train that cleans the line? Coming from Wigan. DF15E043-082E-4949-BFA2-4C88DEF95E16.jpeg

Yep, it's a reserved path generally used by the mpv, especially during the autumn.

777003 did a test run to Southport yesterday. When I was on the 09:54 ex Liverpool South Parkway it was sitting in the turnback siding at Sandhills. it followed on to Southport where I photographed it before returning to Sandhills.

How many class 777 units have been manufactured?
Just seen a post of class 777024 at St Margrethen in Switzerland.
