That is amazingly cool. I'm hoping to try the new direct train the week after it opens.

For context, here is the VR press release in English for the revised service... this means that Hanko-Karjaa will see VR electric multiple units (presumably Sm4?) instead of the Škoda Dm12 railbuses.

12.12.2023

H train to start operating between Hanko and Karjaa on 8 January 2024

The train service between Hanko and Karjaa will become a VR commuter service on Monday 8.1.2024. The H-train will also run to Helsinki three days a week.

We previously operated train traffic between Hanko and Karjaa by using long-distance traffic railbuses and, during the electrification work of the track from June 2021, with replacement buses.

On Monday, 8 January 2024, commuter train H will start the service, stopping between Hanko and Karjaa in Hanko North, Santala, Lappohja, Skogby, Tammisaari and Dragsvik. The service level of the trains will improve, and the travel terms and conditions and tickets will be updated to the commuter traffic model.

Ticket prices for children, students and pensioners between Hanko and Karjaa will decrease, while the price of an adult single ticket will increase by €0.60.

Tickets for H train will go on sale on Wednesday, 13 December 2023 at 10 a.m. At the same time, commuter traffic prices will enter into force for tickets for buses replacing the Hanko–Karjaa service from 13 December 2023 to 7 January 2024. All other commuter trains from 5 February to 30 March 2024 will also go on sale on Wednesday, 13 December at 10 a.m.

Example prices, Hanko–Karjaa (adult)
  • Single ticket €7.20
  • 10-journey multi-ticket €57.60 (€5.76 per journey)
  • Season ticket 30 days €116.70
In commuter traffic, children, students, pensioners and off-duty conscripts and non-military servicemen will receive a 50% discount on the price of single and multi-tickets. There will also be a 50% discount on children’s season tickets. Children under the age of seven travel for free. Read more about discount

Traveling with prams is free on commuter trains, and pets and bicycles can be carried at no extra cost.

Direct connection to Helsinki three days a week

Every normal business day, 30 long-distance train services stop at Karjaa. The timetables of the H train serve passengers on transfer connections to both Helsinki and Hanko.

The H train runs on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, also directly between Helsinki and Hanko. The H train departs Helsinki at 8:53 p.m. and arrives in Hanko at 10:45 p.m. The H train departs Hanko at 8:05 p.m. and arrives in Helsinki at 9:53 p.m.

A single adult ticket for the H train between Helsinki and Hanko costs €14.90. You can also get a long-distance multi-ticket or season ticket for the service between Helsinki and Hanko. With these tickets, you can travel on the H train and those long-distance connections where there is a change of train in Karjaa.

They will be using Sm4s: they've got nothing else they can use. Shame the direct service only runs thrice-weekly though. The first H train service is actually this Sunday, but I can't stay overnight at Hanko to ride it.
The newer stock comes maybe next year. I did the Hanko line a few times on the blue coaches and Dv12, never on a Dm12 though. Also got my first Pendolino on one of those trips - I do not recommend a bad hangover and a tilting train....

Interesting to see the amount of work on visibility clearances at level crossings - the 2017 Raasepori was very tragic.

The journey planner at vr.fi shows a single unit doing seven round trips a day - I assume the direct service is to swap the unit.
It is indeed, and the reason it is at that (imo silly) time is to be able to do so without needing an extra unit in service.

I would be surprised if a Sm7 enters service before summer next year, and even when they do, I doubt they'll be used on the H train (except possibly weekends). They're mainly to displace Sm4s onto regional routes, replacing Sm2s once and for all. :'(

The Bernina Bahn is on street view too
Is that the one in which if you push down you can see that the camera seems to be mounted to a flatbed truck with someone sitting in a racing seat with a helmet on?

Ha, seen that one too, reflected in a window at the car shuttle terminal for Vereina tunnel.

The line to Machu-Picchu (Peru) is on Google too.
