0547 Glasgow Euston via Brum cancelled at Carlisle, 117 mins late "Points failure" - presumably near Carluke or Carstairs (55 min lost at each.)
Apart from trains from Scotland the rest of the line seems to be running quite well - unless the odd cancellation was your train!

Yes points failure at Carstairs, my Glasgow bound sleeper was delayed.

Thanks. Been sat on a Glasgow bound train at Preston for the last 30 minutes without a single announcement, any sign of any staff other than BTP who were walking through earlier.

For me, it’s beyond stupid to state this in writing in a company document. We know (and have discussed this in other threads) that the fee system associated with the NRC’s is virtually free money but, Owning Groups/TOCs, if you want the money to continue flowing to your shareholders, don’t say it is “free”!
It's also not the first time Avanti management have been caught in the limelight for attitude issues either...
They do an awfully good job providing ammunition for the RMT and ASLEF, however!

Full closure from New Street <> Coventry from 2200 until close of traffic, due to OHLE issues at Stechford, according to NRE (and all the other usual sources):

Emergency repairs to damaged overhead wires in the Stechford area means all lines will be closed between Birmingham New Street and Coventry. As a result, trains between these stations will be cancelled.

Disruption is expected until the end of service.

Not Avanti's fault on this occasion, of course!

The 1538 from Glasgow south yesterday was cancelled due to delayed incoming train which was delayed due to missing crew. Same cause as the delays the day before.

The next train (via Birmingham) got to Crewe at 1927 (itself 27 late), and guard told everyone for London to get off and get the 1932 from Manchester to London as it will be faster than the

The 1932 didn't actually leave Crewe until 2125. They instead had to get on the Liverpool train arriving about the same time as the original Glasgow at 2209. Original arrival time due 2013.

I think 1A76 failed just outside Crewe. As according to RTT it got to Sandbach at 19:26.

I had the 60-119 minutes delay repay refused one time from Glasgow-London because we all got chucked off at Warrington, and were told to board the following via Birmingham service. About 10 mins into the journey the guard told people to get off at Crewe for a Liverpool-Euston service for a quicker arrival. I think the comfort of having a seat was worth the detour rather than changing and probably standing for a quicker arrival, as about 100 people got off and waited.

Though I do feel like delay repay still should have been granted even though we stayed on the via Birmingham service.

More fun and games today on the WCML, Trent Valley is shut, adding an hour on to journey times. The 18:40 south from Crewe has also been cancelled (got an advance). Could i theoretically hop on the 17:27 instead?

Would it have been a better idea in 2010 to just make more coaches instead of the 4 new trainsets?
You'd have 52 (rather than 56) Pendolinos but all would be 11 coaches, creating a more uniform fleet.
The extra 4 trains (one of which replaced the Grayrigg write-off) were so that Glasgow services could go hourly, and to put some 390s on Euston-Birmingham-Scotland services instead of Voyagers.
The DfT decided on the order size and made the procurement.
Virgin just did the roll-out.

Not today, that was the weekend. Short notice cancellations today. The Crewe-Stafford shuttle only operating one way, all cancelled Crewe-Stafford. Just operating Stafford-Crewe
Sorry, no, but it's booked today as well. Just look at times on RTT, they're all VAR times with routing via Bescot.
EDIT Back to normal routing tomorrow.

Description

Engineering work is taking place between Nuneaton and Stafford, closing all lines.

Avanti West Coast:

Saturday and Sunday:

An amended and reduced service will run on all routes, and trains will be diverted to run via Birmingham New Street instead of via Nuneaton.

Replacement buses will run between Coventry and Nuneaton.

Monday:

Trains will be diverted to run via Birmingham New Street instead of via Nuneaton.

Replacement buses will run between:

  • Coventry and Nuneaton.
  • Birmingham International and Lichfield Trent Valley.
London Northwestern Railway:

Trains between London Euston / Northampton and Crewe will only run between London Euston / Northampton and Rugby.

Rail replacement buses will run between Rugby and Stafford.

If you are travelling between Stafford and Crewe you should use alternative rail services.

That's due to an issue near Alsager. Trains are only able to run towards Crewe. EMR starting/terminating at Stoke. Tickets being accepted via Stafford/Tamworth as appropriate, with replacement buses operating as well.

Route(s) affected

Between Crewe and Newark Castle

Description

What has happened?

There are urgent repairs to the track needed at Alsager. This is between Crewe and Stoke-on-Trent and is disrupting trains on the Crewe / Derby / Newark Castle route.

Network Rail have confirmed that the damage is more extensive than anticipated so repairs are taking longer. Repairs will continue overnight in order for the line to reopen on Tuesday 23 January.

How does this affect my train?

Trains will remain suspended in both directions between Crewe and Stoke-on-Trent.

Trains running from Newark Castle towards Crewe will terminate at Stoke-on-Trent.

Trains running from Crewe to Newark Castle will start at Stoke-on-Trent.

East Midlands Railway expect the line to be fully reopened in the morning (Tuesday 23 January) to allow their trains to run from start of service.

How do I get where I need to be?

Replacement buses:

These will operate between Crewe and Stoke-on-Trent calling all stations during this disruption. As the buses take longer than trains the times may not exactly match the train times.

Alternative routes available:

If you are travelling between Crewe and Stoke-on-Trent

You may use your ticket to travel via Stafford changing for connections with Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry, Northern and London Northwestern Railway. This is likely to extend your journey time by up to 45 minutes.

If you are travelling between Crewe and Derby / Nottingham

You may use your ticket to travel via Tamworth changing for connections with CrossCountry and London Northwestern Railway. This is likely to extend your journey time by up to 60 minutes.

My 19.53 from London Euston to Stockport was cancelled. It was still due to run when I checked around 17.30 but then an email was sent around 1/2 hour later to say it was cancelled.

The 20.13 did turn up and keep to time, but was a slower journey.

As I am using Avanti for a single and effectively another return journey in February, I shall look the status up at shorter notice.

1S69 EUS - GLC cancelled yesterday due to lack of train crew. Another one who will be keeping an eye out on the carryings on at this company having a long distant trip booked next month with them.

I do wish people would put the train time as well as the head code when posting these things.

It would be interesting to record performance metrics based on the percentage of services which

  • Ran to the originally advertised timetable
  • Departed on time
  • Arrived at each stop and terminus on time
  • Travelled with the onboard service (WiFi, food, charging points) functioning as intended.
I suspect that number, rather than number hiding the faked “pre cancellations”, not to mention significant parts of the promised service missing (for example the ability to buy some food using some form of modern payment on a 5-6 hour journey) might be rather stark and better reflect the actual passenger experience.
