Early shutdown on the AWC Manchester to Euston route with last services around 5pm. There’s also a 50mph speed restriction on for quite large chunks of the route.
Ditto Wolverhampton. All the evening services out of Euston are cancelled.

The industry really ought to have a standard response to the Yellow, Amber & Red warnings for wind and rain. AWC have a Do Not Travel tomorrow LNER say don't travel North of Edinburgh nothing to the South, XC there maybe some disruption please check and TPE have

Due to the forecast given, we’re advising customers to do not travel on the following route after 14:00 on Sunday 21 January:

- Services between Preston and Edinburgh

And do not travel on the following route after 16:00 on Sunday 21 January:

- Services between Preston and Glasgow

yet the Amber Met Office warning covers the whole of Northern England/Scotland. Guess there is an upside as not all operators are taking the warning literally and are being measured on the East side of the UK.
Well said.

The impression I get from weather forums is that there is some surprise that the London area hasn’t been included. I think it’s fair to say tonight isn’t going to be nice for anyone, with disruption likely pretty much anywhere across the entire country.

It’s probably reasonable advice for anyone not to embark upon a non-essential journey or outing that isn’t going to be completed by the late afternoon, especially longer distance.
Strong agree. Hard to see a reason for the hole in the amber warning.Screenshot_20240121-134625.pnggustmph_20240121_06_017.jpg

I was due to fly from Belfast to London tonight on the last flight, which unsurprisingly has been cancelled in the past hour.

All credit to BA, the cancellation text included details of the flight tomorrow that I was automatically rebooked onto, together with the option to change it to a different flight free of charge, or request a refund. I decide a flight at 06:45 was too early for me, so changed it to a more civilised time. All very easy to do online - something that the TOCs should try and do.

CSL2 Code Black for Avanti West Coast due to mass cancellations and delays expected over the next couple of hours. Winds are strengthening quite rapidly now and we’re nowhere near at the peak of the storm.

Code black has not been issued at Avanti they are still running services albeit slow for obvious reasons. 1433 departed Glasgow and is running 3 late at present

WMT going to be busy. Half hourly Euston to Northampton all stations and hourly from Brum to Northampton.

Suspect the split is because they might have to give up on north of Northampton at some point, but south of it should be OK.

It’s not that bad here in London at least. Just a blustery day

It is only just gone 3pm - We are barely at the start of the event which will peak later tonight and into the early hours.

Going to be a testing period. Thinking about tomorrow morning...what is the process for this type of thing to check / inspect the infrastructure?

Picked up here in Hertfordshire in the last half hour or so. However the worst time is expected to be much later on.

London and the SE are still only under yellow warning and may escape the worst of it. Of course there's little point Avanti running Euston to MKC shuttles.

It still seems like the London area will see a pretty severe event. Indeed the lack of amber warning here seems to be attracting some consternation. Time will tell, but it seems like it’s more going to be a case of escaping the very worst rather than worst. Multiple hours of 50+ winds, saturated ground, and many trees already having taken quite a hit over the last few weeks, is potentially still very dangerous.

From Network Rail Scotland:

Our weather specialists confirm the forecast has worsened, with a high likelihood of damage to Scotland’s Railway. All passenger and freight services will be suspended from 19:00, with trains still on the network completing journeys under speed restriction.

Random question... On RTT, the AWC cancellations out of Euston seem to have a 50/50 split of cancellation codes. Half of them are showing XW (high winds), and the other half are showing X4 (heat).

Input error or is it another code that RTT can't decipher, thus reverting to 'heat'?

Just like the local buses immediately returned to depot upon arrival of snow last year leaving passengers stranded....

Yes I get it that bus drivers need to get home too but they are supposed to run a public service and put the passengers first
The buses don't stop running so that the bus drivers can get home. They stop running because the conditions aren't safe to continue operating.

RTT error, code X4 is : Blanket speed restriction for extreme heat or high wind in accordance with the Group Standards

Looking at the weather maps, Eastern parts of East Anglia may be spared the worst but the area north of London, bordering on the fens could have some very strong gusts, so I'm surprised they're only in the yellow area.

What is a CSL2 Code Black?

Usually 1st service on each route is cancelled and run ECS to check the lines are safe.

There are two storms, one tonight and another on Tuesday night. In between will be pretty gusty too.

A queue of trains is now forming outside of Newark due to a ‘object’ on the OLE.

What is a CSL2 Code Black?
It's industry language for the most severe disruption on a route, CSL stands for Customer Service Level

Green is anything up to 10 min delays
Yellow is anything over 10 min delays
Red is line closure but trains may divert and alternative arrangements can be made
Black usually ends in a do not travel message as multiple routes are facing major problems
