Hey,
I have recently been offered a job with Stagecoach as a trainee bus driver. I have to attend a medical next month.
I am autistic, and I am on medication - Sertraline 150mg.
However, DVLA is not aware of my autism or my medication as it does not affect my ability to drive - would i be right in saying that I would not have to disclose my Sertraline on my medical?
I've been driving a car for 7 years whilst on Sertraline and have had no side effects and the D4 form states to only mention medication that could affect safe driving. I'm stressing over it and don't know what to do.
What i'm thinking is that if i don't disclose it, Stagecoach could conduct random drug testing throughout employment and i'm worrying it show up on that.
Any help would be appreciated.

I've been on sertraline in the past and suffered no side effects. It does state that one side effect can be feeling sleepy (but it's rare) and it is given usually as it has fewer side effects overall. I've just started training at Arriva and we did a saliva test during the application process. They are looking for illegal drugs, cocaine, cannabis etc etc so it is unlikely that it would show up anything else BUT the only way to be sure is to seek medical advice from your doctor. You can also buy the sort of urine or saliva tests that a lot of places use (on amazon) so it might be worth looking there to do your own test at home. Good luck with it. Your autism shouldn't be a barrier to being a bus driver, in fact I'd say that it might even make you a better driver in some situations (I was a teacher for 20 years and taught many autistic students).

I started at stagecoach last year, they give you a medical questionaire and the company nurse will run through with you.

Stagecoach do a urine test as part of their pre employment medical for drugs. Blood pressure, eye sight, and weight were the other elements of the medical.

I already held a PSV licence. The company nurse will complete the D4 with you, and as long as it’s not relevant it won’t have any impact on you.

Disclose your medication to the DVLA and also to Stagecoach. Your GP will be able (with your permission) to confirm to the DVLA that your medication does not affect your ability to drive. Certain Stagecoach operating companies have form for seeking to dismiss employees by using whatever means even if unrelated to the actual reason. By disclosing before commencing employment you remove the option of dismissal due to concealment.
