I am trying to track down dates for the renumbering of some of the WD 2-10-0 from the WD to BR number series.

The ones I am looking for are:
  • WD73779/90755 - I know it entered BR service at Grangemouth depot in Feb 1949
  • WD73784/90760 - I know it entered BR service at Motherwell depot in Mar 1949
  • WD73788/90764 - I know it entered BR service at Motherwell depot in Mar 1951, but had previously been at Rugby Test Plant in Feb 1949
  • WD73789/90765 - I know it entered BR service at Grangemouth depot in Feb 1949
  • WD73794/90770 - I know it entered BR service at Motherwell depot in Mar 1949
If anyone can help, I'd be very grateful - the renumbering dates do not appear on the brdatabase website.

TIA

Hugh Longworth's listing, in his definitive cataloguing of every steam locomotive BR ever owned, gives the renumbering dates as follows

90760 November 1951
90764 September 1952
90765 December 1951
90770 August 1952

90755 is one of only five WDs for which only the year is given - 1950. The other four are 2-8-0s 90143, 90194, 90494 and 90619

All WDs passed into BR ownership in December 1948, but did not all enter service immediately.

Many thanks for the 2-10-0 information.

The 2-8-0's I have more detailed dates for (sourced from Railway Observers and SLS magazines)

WD77171 to 90143 - March 1949
WD77226 to 90194 - September 1951
LNER (6)3173 to 90494 - September 1950
WD77481 to 90619 - May 1950

These may be of interest to some.

All 25 WD 2-10-0s were in store on 1st January 1948 when BR came into existence, except 73798/90773 and 73799/90774 which were allocated to Carlisle Kingmoor. The last to enter BR service was 73791 /90767 which was allocated to Kingmoor in August 1950. The survivors (most of the class) were withdrawn en masse in December 1962.

90755 appears to have been allocated to Grangemouth (65F) by the time of the first organised BR list in August 1950.

Sorry to pop back up again, but I have two more renumbering dates that I am not sure about.
  • When WD73799 was renumbered 90774 (I understand it was by October 1949, but I don't have the exact month)
  • When Powlesland & Mason 0-4-0ST was renumbered from 696 to 1150
Thanks in anticipation.

Part Ten of the RCTS history (page K263) gives the date of renumbering of 696 to 1150 as December 1951.

Longworth gives WD73799's renumbering to 90774 as having taken place in May 1949

The BRDatabase lists 73799 as entering Cowlairs Works in May 1949, so it seems likely renumbering took place while in the Works, probably after a re-paint!
