Manchester Metrolink

From the start of service on Monday 12 February, the East Didsbury-Shaw and Crompton service will operate between East Didsbury and Exchange Square only. There will be no peak service between Shaw and Crompton and Exchange Square.
The East Didsbury-Rochdale Town Centre service will continue to operate via Market Street, Shudehill and Victoria, and there will be additional double trams so everyone can make their journey.
This change has been made to reduce congestion in Manchester city centre, journey times and the number of delays across the Metrolink network since the broken rail at Victoria has seen 8 trams every 12 mins using Mosley St in each direction.

That seems to be a good temporary plan. There is a loss of frequency but same capacity with all stops open.

As a regular commuter on the Rochdale line, not impressed by this, the frequency is more important than getting a double tram. Will mean having to plan my train/tram connection both start and end of day more carefully.

Though on the positive side if it means a tram actually runs every 12 mins rather than 3 in 12 mins then a 20-25 min gap that's at least easier to plan.

It's a shame they can't run Victoria to Shaw, but this would conflict with the airport trams.

Less capacity between Victoria and Shaw, because there are already some doubles in the 10tph frequency and they are not promising the 5tph to Rochdale will all be doubles.

How do the normal passenger loadings between Shaw and Rochdale compare to the average Metrolink loadings of all lines?
It's not usually super busy beyond Oldham towards Rochdale, because of the time discrepancy between the direct train into Victoria from Rochdale and the tram the whole way into Victoria. Hence, a lot of people aren't prepared to do the slog the whole way in unless they're trying to save compared to Northern Rail's prices or are going onwards on the tram outside the City Zone.

That's really not good, considering that Victoria - Shaw and Crompton was already just about getting by without full trams with 10tph during rush hour (every other tram being a double).
Of course, this might be good for the line's punctuality if they get the single track sections' timing right, but with passenger numbers still increasing to pre-COVID levels, 5tph and "additional" double trams likely aren't going to be enough for commuters if they don't fix the Victoria issue quickly.

Quick question about signal priorities on the airport line.

Why do the signal priorities on the line kick in so late. When leaving wythenshawe interchange for example, the tram has to slow right down before speeding back up when crossing Rowlandsway and Woodend Road. Is this done purposefully so the tram crosses the road junctions at a slower speed, or is it just the signal change being prompted too close to the junction so the tram reaches it too fast? I don’t know how the signal prioritisation works on metrolink whether there are beacons on the track or if the trams send a signal so any insight would be interesting

It’s just badly set up. There is an ongoing project to try and improve things but the APL is low priority at the moment.

Does anyone have the t68 2010 announcements that include “this is a mediacityuk service” “this is an Eccles bi mediacityuk service” and “this is a piccadilly via mediacityuk service”

Is there any updates on the Trafford park line extending to crumpsall, is it still slated for early this year or has it been pushed back

The current issues at Victoria have put a rather large spanner in the works there.

What are the issues at Victoria?
Nothing running between Exchange Square and Victoria on the Second City Crossing route (due to a cracked rail affecting a strategic piece of the pointwork near Victoria, so all through trams having to run via Market Street)?

Broken crossover on the entrance affecting access to the Second City Crossing (Metrolink between St Peters Square and Victoria via Exchange Square), and the Victoria to St Peters Square via Market St/Picc Gardens section too.

Sounds painful, have Metrolink given a timescale for repair/replacement?

Guessing being a crossover it's likely to be a bespoke design that'll need manufacturing rather than an off the shelf bit of kit...

Believe so, heard they've got to wait for a bespoke part to fix the crossover.

Have TfGM given any idea of the time requirements to fabricate the replacement crossover and for it to be installed?

No, the last update on the 29th February 2024 (see below) is still: '[a]s of Tuesday 20 February, Metrolink and the track manufacturer are working to establish a date for the track crossing is replaced.'

What is happening to the track crossing?

The track crossing which was removed on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 January has been transported to the track manufacturer’s factory for further inspection.

The track manufacturer and TfGM are working on a plan to replace the crossing as soon as possible. Once the track crossing is replaced, all tram services will return to normal.

Why wasn’t the track crossing replaced straight away?

The track crossing which has been removed is not a standard piece of track and was designed specifically for the complex junction at Victoria. Because of this, Metrolink cannot replace the track crossing with the spare rails kept in store.

What works are happening at Victoria?

As of Tuesday 20 February, the track crossing which was removed has been transported to the manufacturer’s factory and is in the process of being inspected to determine whether a repair is possible.

When the track crossing is returned from the manufacturer’s factory, Metrolink staff will undertake work at Victoria to prepare for replacement of the track crossing.

When will the track crossing be replaced?

As of Tuesday 20 February, Metrolink and the track manufacturer are working to establish a date for the track crossing is replaced.

Once a plan is developed for replacement of the track crossing, this will be communicated to customers and this page will be updated.

Not trying to undermine the issue but what makes the junction at Victoria as complex as they say

I wouldn't say it's complex, you can see roughly the junction if you use satellite view on Google maps.

I think it's more possible that it's the only junction on the system configured that way so it's not a spare part they stock

Both of the tracks through the diamond crossing are curved, so the components are bespoke.

Yes, I understand, but I wouldn't use the word complex just not a stocked bespoke item so if it breaks as it has on both ends of victoria they get sent away

It's a fairly tricky geometry to tie in with the tight curves into the platforms and the divergence of the 2CC and the original route, plus various features to be avoided in between. I expect a layout using simpler components wouldn't have fitted in the space.

There's been a collision between a tram and a bus in Manchester city centre. @507 001 may have more details.

The Metrolink in Manchester city centre is disrupted this morning after a crash.

Pictures show the crash between a tram and a coach on Portland Street, close to Piccadilly Gardens. A number of service changes are now in place due to the incident.

According to the Bee Network, the lines impacted are the Ashton-under-Lyne to Eccles line, the Altrincham to Bury line, the Altrincham to Piccadilly line and the Bury to Piccadilly line. Ashton services will operate to Piccadilly and Eccles services will operate to Exchange Square.

The crash disruption has now been cleared, from the pictures I've seen either the coach reversed into the tram or the tram driver misjudged the space available to run behind the stationary coach.

From the picture in the MEN this sounds like the most likely explanation to me.

It looks to me like due to the curves around that crossing the front of the tram made it past, but then the side of the tram swung in to the back of the coach.

There is a yellow box on the crossing, but presumablly the coach driver either ignored it or misjudged the length of their coach and thought they had enough space to get across.
