My wife and I are travelling to Glasgow early in June. We are actually going on the 9th June, but I thought I would take a look today as I saw tickets are now available on the LNER website, for the previous Sunday (2nd) .. just to get an idea of prices

For some reason, I would be able to book NCL to EDB (see screenshot) but if I picked the whole journey, ie to Glasgow Queens Street, this is not available. Obviously buying through-tickets (or whatever they are called) works out much cheaper.

is it simply that the Scotrail tickets are not available yet, at least not available for other train company websites.

The RailUK site doesn't yet show any LNER trains for that date

thanks !

This is because different train operators open bookings at different times. The journey planner is probably trying to take you on a ScotRail service to Glasgow, and therefore you cannot book yet as ScotRail has not released tickets.

It's a bit more complex than that - none of ScotRail's services require reservations and their services from Edinburgh to Glasgow don't even offer them. So in theory it's possible to buy tickets for the ScotRail part of the journey now.

What's happening is that LNER normally only sell tickets up to around 8-12 weeks ahead, which is generally how far in advance timetables are confirmed (in terms of engineering work changes etc.) and how far ahead Advance tickets are released.

For a limited number of journeys served by their own trains, they will sell LNER Advance tickets further than 12 weeks ahead based on unconfirmed timetables - online and in e-ticket format only, so they have your contact details in case of any changes.

However, this additional availability is something that most other retailers can't offer because of technical limitations imposed by LNER. This will be why the forum's site can't offer the Newcastle-Edinburgh Advances that LNER are currently offering.

I would suggest waiting until closer to 8-12 weeks ahead before booking. Whilst it's possible that the cheapest Advances will sell out, since it's impossible to buy those through to Glasgow this is really more of a theoretical loss than a "real" one.
