Hi all, I have just purchased a ticket for the 1134 Bristol temple meads to Exeter St Davids service by Cross country, and have been unable to book a seat reservation. I'm aware this service starts at Newcastle.

I'm just wondering what My chances of getting a seat are and wheres best to head to try get one? Or am I likely standing?

Possibly because the number of carriages has yet to be confirmed and therefore XC don't yet know how many seats will be on your service. During the week it could be as little as 4 coaches but on a Saturday it could be up to 8 or 9 looking at the last couple of weeks

Drat... hopefully it's 5 coaches I haven't seen it be more than that, maybe I'll head for Parkway to try get a seat . Also I suppose it's a bus from tiverton so.

What day? In the week it should be fine. At the weekend probably not. There's often lots of reserved seats with no-one sat in them, so while they may have sold all the seats, they won't all be occupied

I presume the ticket you have bought is not a train-specific Advance, which is only sold with a reservation. All other tickets are flexible, so you could (if your schedule allowed) opt for a different train on the day if you knew it was only 4 coaches (Realtimetrains is your friend here).

Oh right, that's a bit weird then. I would expect that to be pretty quiet - XC's "How busy is my train" checker thing says there are many seats available
Odd as I didn't set any preferences. I'm sure in that case I may get a seat.

I would say not too busy going down south west in the morning and not many people are going south of Bristol at that time. It is not the case when you go for the other direction that many south west people travel up to Bristol and it is always full and standing travelling north in the morning.
You will be very likely to get a seat as many people from midlands and north will alight at Bristol and the coach will be likely to be more than 50% empty whatever it is a 4 or 5 cars.
