Hi all,

Can someone advise me, please, of the valid routes between Atherstone/Nuneaton and Birmingham New Street/Birmingham International.

Is Nuneaton to Birmingham Stations allowed via Coventry or Rugby (I suspect not in the case of Rugby).

I often travel the via Rugby route, but with separate tickets - to avoid the cancellations on the Nuneaton to Coventry line and the chaos of Birmingham to Nuneaton at rush hour.

Any advice is, as always, very much appriciated
.
Kind regards,

Steve.

Via Coventry is a valid route for Nuneaton to Birmingham New Street.

National Rail actually recommends going via Coventry for Nuneaton to Birmingham International.

In other threads of this nature, members have recommended the Routing Guide Data section on the Rail Delivery Group website: https://data.atoc.org/routeing-guide

nre.co.uk only shows Nunaton-Birmingham New Street as being valid via Water Orton, and Nuneaton-Birmingham International via Coventry. It shows the same for journeys from Atherstone, although you can go to Water Orton via Nuneaton or Tamworth.

It's a bit more liberal if you specify a journey to Birmingham Moor Street or Small Heath or somewhere like that, but Rugby's a bit too far even for that.

As JW4 said later on, Nuneaton-Birmingham International is valid via Birmingham New Street or via Coventry. Sorry about that.

The routeing guide that you quote only shows map BP as valid Nuneaton-Birmingham - and not via Coventry - as per kieron's post also, and the map is pretty simple (https://data.atoc.org/routeing-maps):

PS It's >8 miles further Nuneaton-Coventry-Birmingham than via Water Orton.

For an example, let’s take a 13:37 departure from Nuneaton to Birmingham International.
The National Rail Journey Planner suggests a purchase of a Single ticket and changing at Coventry.

For another example, let’s take a 13:43 departure from Nuneaton to Birmingham International.
The National Rail Journey Planner suggests a purchase of a Single ticket and changing at Birmingham New Street.

Both are valid routes from Nuneaton to Birmingham International and both are recommended, at different departure times, by the National Rail Journey Planner.

Birmingham International and Birmingham New Street are different cases.

Nuneaton to Birmingham New Street is only valid via Water Orton.

Birmingham International has Coventry as one of its associated routeing points, and therefore Coventry is a valid route for Nuneaton to Birmingham International - it's not always quite as simple as that but in this case it is. It's also going to be the shortest route via Coventry, so is a valid route, whereas Nuneaton to Birmingham New Street has a much shorter route via Water Orton.

EDIT And, yes, Nuneaton to Birmingham International is valid via Birmingham New Street, that's a different case again. Birmingham International is also associated with the Birmingham group of stations, and travel via Birmingham New Street passes the fare check rule, so it's a valid route.

I think I needed to relate my argument more specifically to the OP’s case, for Nuneaton to Birmingham New Street.

Yeah you can’t buy a ticket from Nuneaton to Birmingham Stations that is valid via Coventry. The OP will have to keep buying separate tickets to have valid travel via Coventry or Rugby for Nuneaton-Birmingham NS.

nre.co.uk only shows Nunaton-Birmingham New Street as being valid via Water Orton, and Nuneaton-Birmingham International via Coventry.
In relation to @kieron's post, yeah the first part is true, my bad for not clarifying what I meant properly. For Nuneaton-Birmingham International, we have proven a single ticket between the two stations is valid via both Birmingham New Street and via Coventry.
