New Mills Central landslip - 6 week closure

I’m hearing reports that the land next to the track has subsided at New Mills Central. This comes after a 5mph emergency speed restriction imposed by Network Rail, which has been in place for a prolonged period of time. It’s been said that the earth besides the track has been moving, although I’m unaware at the rate or severity at this moment of time.

National Rail Enquries:

A safety inspection of the track between New Mills Central and Manchester Piccadilly is causing disruption to journeys between these stations.

As a result, trains may be cancelled or delayed by up to 30 minutes.

We anticipate disruption will continue until the end of the day

Train services are unable to run between New Mills Central and Manchester Piccadilly.

UPDATE:
We anticipate disruption will continue until the end of the day on Monday 6 May.

Indeed. Has been dipping for months. There was an initial 20mph TSR on it dropped to 5mph. It was bound to happen sooner rather than later.

This possibly will take months to fix. Think Eden Brows! It's location isn't ideal either. No tangible way to get equipment to it either.

And just like that, NRE has just tweeted 6 week closure...

I suspect that's a little bit ambitious

Here's the latest from Nation Rail with the disruption estimated until Monday 6th May:

Disruption between New Mills Central and Manchester Piccadilly expected until the end of the day on Monday 6 May

Route(s) affected

Between Sheffield / Chinley / New Mills Central and Manchester Piccadilly

Description

A safety inspection of the track between New Mills Central and Manchester Piccadilly is causing disruption to journeys running between these stations.

As a result, trains may be cancelled or delayed by up to 30 minutes.

We anticipate disruption will continue until the end of the day on Monday 6 May.

Effect on service:

Train services are unable to run between New Mills Central and Manchester Piccadilly.

Services from Sheffield will be diverted via Stockport and will not call at New Mills Central, Strines, Marple, Romiley, Bredbury, Brinnington and Reddish North.

Services between New Mills Central and Manchester Piccadilly will be revised to terminate at / start back from Marple.

Alternative travel advice:

Customers at New Mills Central, Strines, Marple, Romiley, Bredbury, Brinnington and Reddish North are advised to travel into Manchester Piccadilly, and then travel back towards New Mills Central.

Customers for Manchester Piccadilly can travel from New Mills Newtown.

Rail replacement transport is in operation between New Mills Central and Marple calling at Strines, in both directions.

Additional information:

Network Rail staff are on site working to rectify the issue.

At least they can run to Sheffield via Stockport so the disruption is fairly minimal (does anyone use Strines? :) ). Marple pax may enjoy having empty trains to board! :)

The Hope Valley Line had 2 tracks for about 11 hours.
Now everything'll probably have to go through the 1 track wide Hazel Grove Chord.

Could TPE send some via Huddersfield (when TRU works aren't going on)?

Hey, I've used Strines before! Only once though.

Could be. A freight driver I know said he went over it last week and was ready to bail out of the cab because the lurch was that bad.

Even sat in the saloon of a 195, you could feel it

The Hope Valley Stopper should be quite a bit quicker running via Stockport. Wonder if it will pass through without stopping?

Will they divert the stoppers or is it the bus to Marple from now on?!

This embankment failure could take months to sort out. They’ll need to decide what’s causing it first (water!) and then they’ll need to design the remedial measures.

I've never known so much rain as the last year or so. Climate change is just adding more and more problems, ironically to the mode that's best placed to reduce it.
Is it climate change? Or has all the Victorian infrastructure been taken for granted?

It’s probably a bit of both - not so much taken for granted, but unexpectedly having to cope with stresses at a stage when they’re getting on a bit. “Maintenance holidays” won’t have helped either.

Victorian infrastructure is frequently poor at best, but especially so with earthworks.

This winter has been spectacularly wet though and water is the main driver for most earthworks failures.

The problem is there is often very little in terms of maintenance you can do in these cases and you often need to do significant rebuilds.

The Piccadilly to Sheffield services will all divert via Stockport (without stopping). The New Mills Central terminators will use Single Line Working between Marple and New Mills.

Perhaps in the South West & parts of the south, not so much above average in the north.
The north west has had 145% of average annual rainfall over the past 6 months, February was 175% above average. Elsewhere has been even more above average, with the East seeing 283% of average rainfall in February

It did, the Up line remains open, it is the Down line that is closed. So services to and from New Mills Central will use the Up line with Single Line Working in place.
according to the national rail app, they are going via Stockport in both directions.

Am I right in thinking there will be no trains between Marple and Sheffield until 6th May due to this incident?
It looks like today, two trains ran from Manchester to Sheffield via Marple with the rest being diverted. In the other direction all the trains seem to have been diverted. The diverted trains run non-stop from Chinley to Manchester.

The trains terminating at new mills central seem to be running via their normal route, national rail seems to be showing rail replacement buses from new mills to Chinley.

So if you need to get between Marple and Sheffield, your options seem to be either to go via manchester or to take a train to New mills, followed by a rail replacemet bus to Chinley and then a train onwards to Sheffield.

I've never known so many landslips and sinkholes in my 21 years on the railway.....
Yes it's extreme. We've had one of the wettest February's in recent times and a very wet winter so it's wrecking much of our ageing Victorian infrastructure. I've been in my house nearly 8 years and my lawn in the boggiest it's ever been, so soggy you can't walk on it much.

So presumably stations between Manchester and NMC will loose half of their services.
