How common are dividing trains in the UK?

Less common than it was, and, depending on which TOC it is, they might 'divide', 'spilt', 'separate' or some other term, en route, rather than having a sensible single national term for it. I used to commute via Redhill and one of my regular runs was on a three-way divider there - to Tonbridge, Gatwick and Reigate. I don't think that survived. I also keep hoping to see slip coaches but they seem to have dwindled... ;)

I think I might have missed the original post (#94) too, as I brought the same service up too without realising it has come up before. Easy to do: easy to forget that you've contributed something to a thread then contribute again without realising the thread has been reactivated!

No, I thought it was another one on the topic. Ah well, I'll post again in a few months! Thanks for pointing it out.
It just suddenly seemed something I’d read before. I think this thread did go through a lull until someone kicked it off again.

A couple of extra weekday splits on GA from the June timetable. The 16:14 Liv St to Clacton splits at Colchester with the rear 5 forming a new (well restored) 17:26 to Walton on the Naze (via Colch Town) and the 16:42 Liv St to Clacton also splits at Colchester with the rear 5 forming a portion to Harwich Town.

Interesting that such services are being provided in the shoulder-peak rather than the peak.

That said I remember seeing GA are introducing some extra services in the full peak, though can't remember if they go to Harwich or Walton.

I didn't even know these existed until a couple of months ago when I was walking through Waterloo station and heard the automated voice talking about how a train was going to divide and which carriages you should sit in for which destinations. I forgot about this till now, but it really intrigued me. Are they common anywhere else in the UK other than on the SWML? I've never heard of them from other operators across the country before.
I used to be in the RAF at chivenor North Devon in 1955 and regularly used the midnight splitting train , 2 dropped at Andover, 2 @ Salisbury,2 @ Exeter then on to Barnstaple and drop me off at Chivenor RAF station then it went on to Ilfracombe with I think on 2 carriages left
