A very silly mistake - going to Cork by accident...

I’ve done something rather stupid.

I went to Dublin Heuston station, intending to go to the Atlantic coast. However several trains were leaving within a few minutes and between handling multiple bags and navigating the ticket machine, I temporarily forgot that Cork is not, in fact, on the Atlantic coast. So I bought a return to Cork. And now I’m on the 1300 service to Cork.

Is it worth it to purchase some additional ticket and change trains to still get to the Atlantic coast? Or should I take it as it is and settle for a day trip in Cork?

A look at the European Rail Timetable suggests that the 13.00 is first stop Portlaoise, so changing for Galway is out. So either go to Cork (nothing wrong with that), change at Limerick Junction for Limerick or change at Mallow for Killarney or Tralee, but you won’t have much time there.

If I do change at Mallow, what ticket should I purchase - Mallow or Cork to Tralee?

Ask the traincrew. You will pass Mallow whether you go to Cork or not as it is the station before. (Mallow is the only place that I have had to leave a hotel by the kitchen window.)

But on from Cork to Cobh is also good.

Stay on the train. Cobh is lovely and it still counts as the Atlantic. Plus the south coast of Ireland has a far more amenable climate than the west coast.

Enjoy the day out. Be sure to have a pint of Beamish, rather than Guinness, which is the stout brewed in Cork.

Also, if you go to Tralee, you don't arrive until 16:58, and the only remaining trains back today are at 17:05 and 19:05, with a four-hour journey back to Dublin.

Come now, don't leave us guessing!

Over forty years ago I stayed in a hotel, though closer to a B&B, in the main street and said that I had to be off for the first train (08.00, I think). No trouble, says they, but when I came down in the morning everything was locked and there was nobody about, nor was there any way of finding anybody. The kitchen was just about the only room unlocked, so I climbed over the sink (the old fashioned square type) and out of the window into the back yard. Luckily the rear gate was unlocked and so I got into a lane and thence round to the main street: I did make my train.

Oooh! Same thing happened to me when staying at Malaig youth hostel in the late 1980's! We (me and two friends) had to climb out of a window to make good our escape and catch our train. It was the time of the 'travel anywhere in the country for a fiver' offer (young person railcard) and we had to make it back to Reading. The hostel warden was a bit of a jobsworth and wouldn't agree to us leaving before official open up time.

By the way, OP, I really hope you enjoyed yourself (and had a pint of Beamish). Wonderful part of the world. :D

As others have said, Cobh is certainly worth visiting. And as for it being on the Atlantic Coast, below is a pic (my own) of unit 2601 leaving Cobh station, taken in 2012. Quite near the coast!

Cork city is a fantastic day out but you'll need all day. If you can fit in a return trip to Cobh while you're there then that's worth doing instead. You can see the best bits in an hour - St. Colman's Cathedral, the Deck of Cards on West View Terrace, the Annie Moore statue and the seafront - and just have enough time for a pint of Beamish at Kelly's before jumping on the train back to Cork.

If it was an earlier train, you could have connected to Galway via Limerick Jct. and Ennis. Not possible from the 1300 service.

But it sounds like you found a good solution anyway.
