Curious arrangements this evening - 3 successive intermodals used the Down Fast between Stafford and Crewe, while passenger trains overtook them, using the Down Slow.

Any suggestions why this would happen?

A simple solution would be optimising schedules, a more complex one would be NR trying to optimise wear, which I doubt.

Were the passenger trains coming from the Wolverhampton direction and the freights from the Trent Valley?

Several freights are booked to use DF. Could be the passengers services came off Wolverhampton line so makes sense to run on slow (or booked on slow)

That was my initial thought with the first 'liner having come off the Trent Valley and the first Pendolino being the Scotland via Brum, but the pattern then broke down with Class 1s off the Trent Valley.

Thank you - that makes perfect sense.

An elegant and practical workaround!

That is the preferred option if available because it removes the risks of standing passenger trains outside of station areas and the risk of self evacuation.
