Did the officer take your name and address and were the details you gave accurate?

It’s likely GTR will write to you within a few weeks asking for your side of the story and after that it’s likely you will be able to pay a sum of money (around £100 perhaps) to bring the matter to an end.

You may want to ask the moderators to change your user name to something that doesn't identify you if that is your real name.

You won't be getting a Penalty Fare - you will be written to and likely be able to settle out of court for a sum much higher than a Penalty Fare. How often have you short fared in this way, and do you usually buy your tickets online?

By telling them that you did not have the money to buy a ticket you basically admitted you got on the train without the ability or intention to pay your fare - so I assume they would then conclude that you were deliberately evading your fare. Deliberate fare evasion is dealt with more severely than with the issuing of a Penalty Fare, and you have essentially admitted you did this because you were on the train without the ability to pay for a ticket.

How were you intending to pay for your journey and get out of the station when you arrived at the destination of Gatwick?

A Horley to Gatwick short ticket? was mentioned in post #5. Another reason not to be given a penalty fare.

IIRC, we don't ever give advice on immigration / visa issues, but, having said that, *could* being prosecuted potentially cause the OP problems, and, if so, where could they go to obtain legitimate / appropriate advice?

If they are a student they will likely have staff at their college / university who are there to help international students with their visa status etc - part of the service offered in exchange for the fees they pay to study here. Or part of the Students Union. They may also have formalised arrangement with appropriate legal firm(s) authorised to give immigration advice / assistance.

So I would suggest for that side of things the OP starts with their college / university.

Any person with queries about immigration and visas in the UK is best advised to employ the services of a registered Immigration Adviser. These are the only people permitted to give such advice under UK law.

The Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner has an Advice Finder tool on its website: https://portal.oisc.gov.uk/s/adviser-finder

Anyone can help me what can i do next if i received a latter and the court
Please upload a pic/photo of the letter on here, as and when received. Be sure to cover up/obscure your name and address and any case reference number(s) quoted.

Presume you provided the train company's staff member with your correct name and postal address and that you're not planning on moving elsewhere anytime soon.

I think i need to contact with any solicitor
Your very first word in your first post was “Yesterday”. Now it happened 4 days ago.

Is there anything else you have said that is not true? If you want us to give good advice you need to give us the full and accurate picture.

I was surprised to read the OP saying the ticket barriers at East Croydon were open, as I've travelled there most days for work over a number of years and very rarely see them not in operation.

It's also very convenient they were open at the precise time the OP travelled without having the money to buy a ticket.

I'm wondering whether the OP maybe doubled-up to get in behind someone else? Or did they potentially travel from elsewhere without barriers? Their story isn't making much sense, which makes it hard for anyone to give advice.
