Yes, they definitely did cut off - and they were analogue, so you got interference all the time too.
I am not sure if they still existed when we got GSM (late 1991), or if they were upgraded if they did. Analogue co-existed with GSM for some time - but coverage was naturally quite poor for an all-new network.
I do think you're better off carrying more than one phone if you desperately need to be able to make a call. I'd make sure at least one is on Orange, T-Mobile or Three as they will all work on the combined Everything Everywhere network when it properly merges in the next few months (there's limited 2G roaming already).
To get back on topic, I think some 365s still have old stickers (even after the refresh) and have the space where they used to be.
