Today I had two separate booking to collect from the ticket vending machine , specifically the Avanti ones at Preston on both counts I pressed collect tickets no need for any card at all I just had to insert my booking reference , is this a common or new occurence as I’ve never come across a TVM that doesn’t require any card at all on collection

It's a new national policy that's rolling out to skip asking for a card if the booking isn't tied to a specific card number.

Indeed, a new standard thing, which was done because increasingly people don't have physical cards, and Verified by Visa etc provide enough security not to need the physical card. I suspect it was prompted by Chase Bank and their "hidden" card numbers.
