Buying the West Midlands Network Daytripper

Planning a trip to Birmingham in a few weeks. On the 26th May (Bank Holiday) we'll be getting the train at about 9 from Five Ways to Longbridge, then walking to Stourbridge Junction. We'll get the train to Jewellery Quarter then the Metro to Five Ways metro.

I think the best option is the Network Daytripper? It looks to me that I can't buy it from Five Ways train station, because the ticket office won't be open until 10? However, I can buy it from the machines at the Metro station? Am I correct in all that, or is it purchasable on the machines at the train station? It's a short diversion to walk to Five Ways train station via the metro on the 26th, we can do that, but is there any other way of getting the ticket? Can I buy it in advance and if so does that have to be at a ticket office at a train station in the West Midlands, or could it be at either: a Metro station ticket machine; or a train station ticket office in a different part of the country (specifically Newcastle)? We will be arriving into Birmingham by car and not at a train station until the 26th, so visiting one before would require a specific trip.

WMR ticket machines should sell Daytrippers. It's under the "Travelcards" option on the home screen.

The names haven't been updated for quite a while though, so it'll appear alongside "Centro One Day" (now nNetwork 1-day)! :D

Might be worth asking at ticket offices at other stations on your way in; I've managed to buy one at Marylebone earlier this year - although of course they had to print it on standard ticket stock instead of the special blue branded stock, but none of the many inspectors who checked it during the day on either trams or trains as much as raised an eyebrow, so they must be used to seeing them on non-standard ticket stock from outside the area...

The Blue stock has been phased out over the last 2-3 years, and they're all printed on Orange now (except, I suppose, some ticket office locations may have some of the blue stock still, but I think most WMT locations print on PRT anyway now).

The only daytrippers now issued on blue stock are the family ones. Others are just normal orange stock, which in WMT land is PRT. But they'll be used to orange CCST.
You can buy on bus or metro aswell as train stations. Or order online and a Swift card

@cuccir you mention Newcastle - I've purchased this ticket from an LNER TVM before, however I seem to remember that selecting a future date wasn't possible (unless I was not seeing or understanding how to do it).

Unfortunately Flowbird TVMs (used by Chiltern, LNER and Northern) only sell Rover tickets and Ranger tickets starting on the day of purchase.

Interesting. My last 3 day trippers (brought in the last month) were issued on Blue stock. Maybe Coventry station has a stash :)

Thanks - I'll see if a ticket office at my local station can do it before I go down to Birmingham

When I bought a daytripper from station ticket office, admittedly a few years ago, I'm sure I can remember being told they could only sell one for the same day or next day.

Not sure whether this rule still applies, and if so whether a TVM would sell one for the following day.

They are both Avanti ticket offices. At WMT all daytrippers except family go on PRT, there's no option to use blue stock-even if we had any!

Only if you’re passing. The easiest is absolutely to buy on the day (e.g. from the tram stop or the ticket machine at the station.)

Yeah, I'd be there as I commute by rail.

However I'd missed @MrJeeves's helpful response. Thanks both, the TVM at Five Ways station should be fine to use!
