It probably depends what you're interested in, what are your interests from a railway perspective? Train Sim World is quite a simple game, so I don't think you need to approach it with too much trepidation or planning, just jump in to whatever interests you the most :)

What is the best DLC for starting out in TSW2
Another good option for beginners would be Long Island Rail Road. This DLC is one of the most popular routes in the game, offering players a classic American railroad with a variety of tasks. In general, I'm waiting for a similar game to come out on the phone. I've tried to find similar games on Google Play many times. I read information about a new game here and am now playing it. If you have any advice, please write your preferences in games. I don't know what to do with myself!
For beginners in Train Sim World 2, the best DLC is the Great Western Express. It is the perfect addition to start with, as it offers a variety of routes and trains, as well as excellent detailing.

Great Western is decent and it's due an upgrade soon so hopefully that will bring it up to more modern standards.

Now I've finally done a run from Preston to Carlisle, I would say that the two Just Trains routes are the best: WCMN North Preston-Carlisle and Blackpool Branches. They are both top quality routes that stand well above anything else in game to me. There are some decent older routes, but they have now been surpassed by the two Just Trains routes.

We are talking about TSW2 not TSW5

For me, I'd have to recommend the Brighton Mainline as part of the Rush Hour addon. It has plenty of end to end runs, and lots of other elements to keep things interesting, such as plenty of AI traffic, coupling/uncoupling of units etc. The 377s and 387s are easy trains to drive too.

It’s the same game.
You can use an older route on a newer version of the game; but you can't use a newer route on an older version of the game. To play Preston - Carlisle the OP would need to upgrade to TSW5. OP, you should consider doing this: TSW5 is on sale now and again, and it allows you to get some much better recent DLCs such as Preston - Carlisle, Blackpool Branches and the coming class 86 addon.
