Heathrow Express move to Platforms 12 and 14 at Paddington

Hello everyone,

I believe that Heathrow Express could benefit from a move to Platforms 12/14 at Paddington station.

The gateline for platforms 12/14 is naturally already separated from everything else. The Heathrow Express Class 387 8-car formations will be a perfect fit for platform 14, so this would bring platform 14 back into regular use. Then platforms 6/7 could be reallocated to GWR services with a simplified single gateline for platforms 2-7. Platform 12/14 are also located very close to the new Taxi Rank with a much shorter walk to taxi via lifts. This would then also keep suitcases primarily to this side of the station away from the main concourse. Furthermore it would also be closer to the new Bakerloo Line access where there is step-free access to the Bakerloo.

I'm sure there are some disadvantages - for example, what should be done with the northern gateline for Platforms 14, 12 and 11 and the overbridge here - perhaps it could be closed or simplified in some way?

This is possibly a solution looking for a problem, but I think there are some advantages to using these two platforms for Heathrow Express.

What does everyone think?

I guess that side of the station is completely opposite to the fast lines which HEx uses, so potentially adds a lot of conflicting movements each hour?

I think that’s going to be much less of a problem than a few years ago, as almost all GWR services use the main (fast) lines since Crossrail.

HeX would probably oppose this move, because it pushes them further away from the main concourse into a rather dark and dingy part of the station, which doesn't chime with the premium service it purports to be.

Platforms 6 and 7 were provided with level access for the original HEX units - I don't know if its still the case for the 387s but I can't imagine HEX giving up what is quite a prime spot in the platform arrangements at Paddington.

Making the most frequent service cross the entire throat 8 times an hour is not a sensible idea

Yes it is still the case, Platforms 6 and 7 are higher than the rest of Paddington's platforms to provide level boarding on a 387, and it means you end up with two effectively unusable platforms for IETs if you move HEX off them.

Here’s a crazy idea. A grade separated junction from the eastbound relief lines to westbound main lines. You could even build it just west of the Elizabeth line tunnel portal for some additional ’through’ trains to Heathrow... oh, uh, hang on.

Curvature and stepping distances on platforms 12 and 14 to a 387 are awful. Just about tolerable for a standard 387; not at all appropriate with heavy luggage etc.

It ain’t broke…
