Good morning - since yesterday evening I’ve been getting this screen when trying to access the WNXX Forum.
Has anyone else experienced this? And is there a solution?
Thanks.

The text of the screen states:

We use cookies, with a generic explanation of why cookies are needed and a button to accept.

Same here. I did look at the main news page this morning to see if there was anything on there about an outage, i couldn’t see anything on the main page and im not a subscriber so couldn't delve any deeper.

WNXX forum Seems to be working again.

Was ok earlier in the day but reverted back to unavailable, consequently unable to see the relevant thread on WNXX!

Yes, I had a very brief interlude of (slow) accessibility yesterday but it soon went back to being unavailable. I haven’t been able to see davews’s link either. Nor any updates about the KWVR gala!

That looks very much like they've forgotten to renew their domain and one of the squatting companies has sniped it from under them!

Could also be a DNS issue though I suppose.

I'm not an expert at reading these things but this doesn't scream that it expired and was sniped?

Not a lot of help if the site is inaccessible!
I did have a look at it yesterday (when the site was accessible) and there was nothing greatly illuminating at the point I was reading. The admins there had flicked some switches and poked some buttons and things seemed to be up and running again at that stage.

I'd agree it doesn't look like that from what you posted from the WHOIS entry.

In which case I'd suggest a DNS issue of some kind. Place to ask would be their domain host - it might well just have gone back to pointing to a default holding page.

It's worth noting that DNS changes can take up to 24 hours to propagate - there is a lot of local cacheing. So even if they've fixed it it could be tomorrow before it's correct for everyone.

Now showing this which is hopefully a step in the right direction.

The screenshot shows a truncated WNXX Forum page with the text “Back in 5…..”.

I wonder if they've had a DDOS attack?

One other major ( non railway ) forum had one a few days ago for no apparent reason.

The question is, when they say "Back in 5..." do they mean hours, days...? (Not a serious question, I know it will take as long as it takes.)

I wondered just the same.
Unfortunately it seems to have reverted to the screen shown in the original post. Perhaps they’ll be back in five weeks.
Unless the Russians really don’t want us to know in advance the identity of the class 70 due to appear at Keighley…..

Posting as a moderator at WNXX.

Just to update, the forum is having problems following a bot attack, and is being restored slowly. The forum owner is doing this on top of maintaining the WNXX site, so will be limited in what he can say by time and energy.

Please bear with us while this is done - we will not be in a position to provide a running commentary.

Hopefully business as usual will resume shortly.

Very many thanks for the update. And also to the forum owner for the sterling work.

There’s now a message on the forum front page
Too many BOTS from or people in Brazil and Vietnam with a virus
rather than the blank page I was getting for the last 24+ hours.
Hope it’s not burning too much time and effort.

I’m getting a random message saying I’ve been permanently banned due to my IP address :D (I’m accessing on 5G from Italy). Presumably they’ve stopped all non-UK access to prevent the attack from continuing.

Ouch! Hopefully, with one of their moderators helpfully posting an update in this thread, you'll be "released" soon after they get it back online.

Message from the forum now:

Forum Load Issues 09/06/25

Starting over the weekend and into today (Monday 9th) the forum has been failing to load, or perform quite slowly, for most users. The host has been contacted and has restarted the server and run tests. Everything is okay at the hosting side of things.

The issue has been identified as high processor use coming from two pages - the board Index page and the Portal page.

There is currently a very high number of non registered users on these pages (varying between several hundreds and several thousands) causing the problems. A look at users details show Brazil and Vietnam being the main locations sources and Apple being the most commonly listed operating system for these.

I don't have a complete solution at the moment, but at least the cause of the problem is identified.

After spending several hours playing 'whack a mole' with offending IP address ranges, which brought the numbers down. then started getting email from UK users who had been caught up in this and barred. The mass IP banning has had to be undone.

In the meantime, board/server load settings have been activated. This should stop the complete board crashes but you will see 'board unavailable messages while the system tries to cope.

Commiserations with the good people behind WNXX! We've had our own battles with bots over the years. Always feels a bit like an arms race :frown:

I am now able to login, but when I try and click into a thread I get the message "Sorry but the board is temporarily unavailable, please try again in a few minutes."

I still can't get to it. Chrome keeps complaining that it doesn't have an SSL certificate and so it won't load it.

If I try access the main loading pages it struggles, but if I use the links in my history to access the sub-pages/forums I can access and use as normal.
