Yes has finished, insufficient stock to continue at the moment, as there is more demand in SW for stock in summer months.

There is no published info, on if and when service will return, and if it does how frequent, or if more days will be added. For time being the public info suggests discontinued indefinitely as nothing about resumption is available.
Hmmm - if the trial was a success you would think there would be some comms.

I guess it depends on what "success" means - sure people may have used it but was it successful enough to warrant procuring new trains?

What I was wondering was if there are sufficient paths to allow the service to run at regular intervals?

Introduction of 175s should directly or indirectly free up a few IETs to do what they were actually designed for instead of trundling around on stoppers.

There may well be communication between GWR and DfT on the matter but it isn’t necessarily for the public domain. GWR have already stated their ambition for a regular 6d/week service between Bristol and Oxford, as have stakeholders along the route (particularly at the Oxford end) so I imagine it’s quite high up the priority list. This suggests there is already a business case for operating it once stock becomes available, whether released by Class 175 deployment or otherwise.

I was going to say, looks like the stock is used for the Pembroke Dock extensions in high summer, which I’d guess was probably a commitment.

It can be accounted for in several ways, as there are also extensions from Plymouth to Penzance, Exeter to Paignton and the Newquay additionals. None of these come off Stoke Gifford directly but they are covered via various rebalancing moves etc. The Pembroke set technically comes off Maliphant.

A shame as it does contradict some intentions (or aspirations) shared here for an hourly week-long service.

Leaves it open for Chiltern/EWR to explore one day too, or the OA. But the 125mph stock must prove handy.

The biggest losers from the service not going to 1tph all-day permanently are probably the Wantage station group...

AFAIK those are still the intentions / aspirations. The initial trial was only ever going to be until Summer 2025.

It would make a lot of sense to link any improvement in service with the launch (when it eventually comes) of East West Rail. Though whether the Class 175 cascade can release enough IET's in time, along with everything else that would need to be done before launch, is a moot point.

At a minimum 175s need to displace some IETs before this service becomes permanent; given 5-car IETs seem to be on a number of Exeter/Plymouth-Penzance diagrams a direct cascade is possible, however there are Intercity services from London also angling for longer formations.
