I have been told that 37057s long awaited split box removal is to be done by the end of this year. Any further updates on this matter would be highly appreciated.

I wonder why the split box is going, when it's not such a common preserved feature.

37057 isn’t a preserved loco so that won’t have been a consideration.

Split boxes will still survive on D6700, 37003, 37009, 37023, 37025, D6729, D6732, D6737, 37042, 37075, 37097, D6808 and 37109, so not exactly a shortage of them!

Split boxes will still survive on D6700, 37003, 37009, 36023, 37025, D6729, D6732, D6737, 37042, 37065, 37097, D6808 and 37109, so not exactly a shortage of them!
I am guessing your "37065" is a typo for 37075 on the Keighley & Worth Valley which only has indicator boxes at the No 1 end. No 2 end is similar to the refurb 37s with a pair of marker lights in the style of 37501 37521 etc

Correct, not the only typo in there either, both now corrected!

I think the consensus from the last few posts is that there are still at least 17 locos with split boxes, 13 of which are 37s. So with that in mind I don’t think 37057 losing its split boxes is a huge loss, especially as unlike the others 37057 is a revenue earning loco and not a preserved loco.

Just to add my penneth, I photo'd S/B 37100 on Donny shed some few decades ago, just after it had had it's buffer cowlings removed, and to my mind that simple mod ruined the aesthetics of the loco's original design, albeit coming from a professional railway background I do (and did then I should add) fully understand the reasoning involved for the mod.
Only recently I have noticed a 37 on my old patch in blue/yellow, similar to large logo livery, but with a very small number, but to the point, the nose ends are completely bare/bland other than the modern day twin headlight clusters.

To my mind this doesn't look right at all, but this is me (an old fxxt) who grew up with 37's in their as built guise. I for one am just thankful that a handful of these locos are still not only in existence today (ie in preservation), but also still operating on the national network.

Between Colas/HNRC, LSL, WCRC and ROG, I’d say much more than a handful of 37s on the mainline.

The irony is that the Headcode boxes were virtually rebuilt from new by HNRC in 2014
Corrosion repairs are seldom simple. From a railway perspective I know something about 458 issues encountered at Wabtec way back, and from other (transport) related themes I have first hand knowledge of corrosion/metal fatigue. Once the rot has gained a foothold, any repairs, however good, will always be chasing the rot so to speak, and will have to be reworked with ever increasing frequency. That frequency will however depend on the professionalism and (hence) resources put in to such repairs in the first instant.
Do a decent job in the first place (which will cost), and the item concerned will last longer before the rot returns. Do/pay for the bare minimum and your money will have gone down the drain before you blink. As an example of the latter I once had rust repair work done to a vehicle with the full knowledge it was only a temporary measure - but even I was gobsmacked when just two weeks after the work was done, the new paintwork was blistering due to bad workmanship, both welding and subsequent pre paint prep. One lives and learns, and it will be no different for the rail industry - you get what you pay for!

Was 37057 bought out of pres with the deal that preservation features remain? If so I doubt it will have its boxes removed.
37057 is also due for an exam at HNRC, who used to own it and I can't see him removing them

Ahh I see. Perhaps that might be the reason why the 60s have rocked up at Colwick for stripping. Diversifying ?
Colas have an established relationship with HNRC, so it makes sense that they would switch their overhaul conteacts to HNRC. Which frees up Boden to support DCR and consequently provides UKRL with some breathing room before the Stadler locomotives (GBRf & others) come on stream.

Also, after the huge failure of 37099, I don't think Colas are keen on Boden....
I understand that the contract for Colas overhaul work has switched from BRE to HNRC.
Would it be an overhaul or just light maintenance? 057 has had years of maintenance recently and not sure it needs anything big..
