Advance ticket rights on 2nd June

Thanks everyone, much appreciated. That all gives me some peace of mind. On some days GA only seem to offer advance tickets via Cambridge on the East Croydon to Norwich flow (even when advances are still available from LST to NRW). On a normal day it's not too much of a time penalty, though it...

Advance ticket rights on 2nd June

I have an advance ticket from East Croydon to Norwich on Friday 2nd June. I intend to travel, but part of my journey isn't running due to the strike, so I wanted to ask for advice on my rights to travel via an alternative route for that part. The ticket is a Greater Anglia & Connections...

Russian invasion of Ukraine - Could this affect international travel to Eastern Europe?

I can understand why one might be a bit worried about going to somewhere close to Ukraine like Suceava, Košice or Rzeszów (though I agree with YorkshireBear that it's very unlikely to extend beyond Ukraine). But I don't think it's justified to worry about areas that aren't close to a border, let...

What is the cheapest season ticket in the UK on a pence per mile basis?

I did some work recently looking at a small selection of commuter routes (in the grand scheme of things...) and a few that stuck out were: Bridgend to Cardiff Doncaster to Sheffield Ely to Cambridge

    "Please join the train now..."

At Victoria for a while these were playing automatically 1-2 minutes before departure time - including for some late-running trains that were only just arriving in the station at the time of the announcement. I think it's become a bit less common in the last few weeks, unless it's just started...

    Southern Rail operating well now?

As a daily East Croydon to Victoria commuter for the last six years, the service now seems the most reliable it's been during any point during that period. Queues to get into Clapham Junction p12 in the mornings still happen, but with less frequency and severity than pre-May 2018 (I think). When...

    Aviavox for railways?

Church Stretton's audio announcements sounded like text-to-speech when I was there last week, including a bizarre pronunciation of 'Manchester' (with emphasis on the 'ches'). Not clear to me why this would be preferred over the usual systems as it sounded obviously worse. I think Gatwick...

London to Norwich - 90 min timings

I thought the Class 755s were primarily intended for the local services, not the mainline?

How are railway network maps created (in computer software)?

Just wanted to add another vote for Inkscape as a free option. It can be clunky, but with some work you can produce decent-looking work. I have no professional experience in this area but managed use Inkscape to make an ok-looking map for a fantasy transport sim project earlier this year.

    Compulsory Ticket Areas (CTA)

When I saw the East Croydon tram CTA sign, I understood it as follows: "If you have just got off a tram, we can still check your ticket and penalise you if you don't have one - it doesn't matter that you're not on the tram any more." I don't think it's meant to preclude people without tram...

Abellio Greater Anglia Class 755s (Regional Trains)

That does make sense - I hadn't considered the impact of shorter journey times on the diagrams required. 10 sets for 9 diagrams does still seem a bit tight, as samuelmorris said. 720 subs won't be a big deal, I suspect - the bigger worry is the possibility of short-formations introduced by the...

Abellio Greater Anglia Class 755s (Regional Trains)

Reports suggest that GA are only getting 10 of the Class 745/0 trains for the intercity Norwich-London route. How can this be enough, given that the current half-hourly service on this route requires at least 10 diagrams? Does it mean that a bunch of the Norwich services are destined to be...

Signalling/power issues in the Streatham area 4/7-5/7

1L38 appears to be heading southbound in service over the affected area now.

    Southern Timetable Change 2018

Something odd I've noticed at Victoria since the timetable change. Trains leaving platform 15 (and probably other platforms too) are regularly getting routed onto the reversible line, even when the main route is clear. This usually results in them having to slow to a stop before crossing over at...

    Southern Timetable Change 2018

Yes, I realise that didn't read quite as I intended. I meant services getting held up by TL prior to ECR, and then by 1I09 after ECR.

    Southern Timetable Change 2018

A few observations commuting from East Croydon to Victoria in the mornings - Plenty of trains delayed following late Thameslink trains. On the 08:08 and 08:15 it's fairly common to wait behind 1I09 (which merges onto the fast at Streatham) before Clapham Junction, which can be frustrating...

    Southern Timetable Change 2018

I don't understand the reduction of peak services to 8 coaches - where have all the trains gone? Checking out morning ECR-Victoria performance on the new timetable so far - I think the timekeeping is mostly comparable to before the change. Probably too early to say if there are problems with...

    Southern Timetable Change 2018

Thanks for the info. That's a downgrade on the old 1718 Littlehampton then, which used to be 12. I think the 1727 Eastbourne used to be 12 as well? Before the change I would have been surprised to see many mainline departures between 1700 and 1800 leave with less than 12 cars (save for Three...

    Southern Timetable Change 2018

The 1715 from Victoria to Eastbourne was 4 cars today - I hope that one is normally down to be 12? I can see this one leaving late regularly. It seems to have a 10-minute turnaround from 1A43, which arrives at VIC at 1705 - and inbound trains at this time will commonly pick up a few minutes...

    Southern Timetable Change 2018

I was surprised by that one, too. Hopefully the earlier services are still 12-car.
