    Newspaper Trains

Thanks for the link, but as it happens, I have the DVD that clip was taken from. I have quite a lot of Woodhead material, including a second hand copy of the 1954 working instructions for the line. I have lots of memories of it too. I did the passenger route between Sheffield Victoria and...

    Leeds City Stations Futuristic Look

I refer to the Nottingham services as semi-fast because they have the four intermediate stops between Leeds and Sheffield, and serve other intermediate stations between Sheffield and Nottingham. They certainly don't fit my idea of an express service, sorry. I was on a semi-fast a couple of...

    Leeds City Stations Futuristic Look

I've had an occasional 158 on Hallam Line stoppers before now. The semi-fasts are operated by them pretty well exclusively, too.

    ATW submit to ORR

Plenty of 158 runs over 3 hours already - Norwich - Liverpool for a start, and several in Scotland. Personally, I quite like the 158's. They would be even better if the aircon could be fixed.

    Very special train on Saturday

As mentioned elsewhere: BBC News channel are broadcasting a programme about the Winton Train on Sunday morning 6th September at 03.30hrs. Presumably their cameras are accompanying the passengers across Europe?

    Serious Train De-railment Liverpool

They were built because BR was operating cash-strapped due to Government policies, and was always looking for ingenious ways to lower costs whilst keeping the services running. The original Pacer idea was to stick a Leyland National bus body on a 2-axle freight wagon underbody. I accompanied a...

    Transpennine Express to Blackpool North

I went to Barrow on a TPE service from Manchester a couple of weeks ago. The trolley left the train at Preston. In my experience of TPE the only stretch where you can depend on seeing a trolley is that between Manchester and Leeds. Anywhere else is pot luck. (Note that I don't use South...

    NXEC plans to barrier stations

The controls on the lower numbered platforms don't differentiate between Northern passengers, TPE passengers or any others. Ditto those on the footbridge where platforms 13 and 14 are accessed. If there are staff checking tickets, they check _everyone's_ ticket!

[Melbourne, VIC] W-class trams trundling into history

Crich is our National Tramway Museum, a site with open air running in Derbyshire. Well worth a visit if ever you're over here: http://www.tramway.co.uk/smx/cms/home/

[Melbourne, VIC] W-class trams trundling into history

It would be nice to see one of those at Crich - they are standard gauge, aren't they?

    transpennine real ale trail advice

Here's the full trail, starting at the Batley end, and do-able only on Northern Trains - definitely NOT Transpennine Express: Batley: Cellar Bar, opposite the station. Opens 16.00 Monday to Thursday, 12.00 other days, and is under the same management as: Dewsbury: West Riding Licensed...

    fTPE Rant

When the 185 prototype was on display at the NRM, I asked one of the staff why the units were not being fitted with connecting doors like the electric Desiros have. He told me they were not allowed on lines where trains run at over 100 mph (ECML, and, since then, WCML too). I still don't know...

Leeds to York returning not on the same day

    Yes, seriously (Arriva West Yorkshire).

Leeds to York returning not on the same day

They are usually working when I pass through Leeds. A problem has arisen now though. One of my friends has an annual Metrocard. The barriers have erased the printed details on it to the extent that a bus driver confiscated it the other day because it was illegible. I don't think I'd be very...

How many fatalities were there in the construction of the Tibet line?

Now for an express rail link [Trans-Pennine]

My suggestion of running the Hull and Scarborough services each hourly (i.e. on alternate half hours) to Manchester Airport would take care of this. It would serve to maintain the quarter-hourly Leeds - Manchester core service as well (although the 2 Newcastle services would serve Victoria...

Now for an express rail link [Trans-Pennine]

I think the whole post is a pretty fair assessment, but the problem with your last suggestion is that the Calder Valley route doesn't have any spare paths for a fast service, given that it currently only carries one semi-fast service (the path for which was created by diverting a Northern...

Now for an express rail link [Trans-Pennine]

And, as I posted elsewhere, fill-in electrification to enable some services to be worked by electric trains.
