    Advice on trip to Australia

Was on Lighthouse Beach, just south of Port Macquarie, a couple of weeks ago. Fantastic and almost deserted.

    Great Southern, Australia

Just travelled on the Great Southern from Adelaide to Brisbane. Three days and two night travel with off train excursions organised. Great food and drinks options and the sleepers were fine. 1970s stainless steel carriages that are usually used for The Ghan, up to Darwin. Had a great time, but...

    Euskotren

In the Basque Country at the moment visiting San Sebastian/Donostia. Making use of the local Basque government trains and it's been an excellent service. There's obviously a lot of money been spent to good effect. We've been based near Usurbil station with trains in each direction every 30...

    Budapest to Bucharest Sleeper

On the 14th June I took the OBB RailJet service from Vienna to Budapest in the afternoon and then caught the overnight Sleeper from Budapest to Bucharest in Romania. Had a 2 berth sleeper in an Romanian sleeper car, (the wife and I think we're too old for couchettes anymore). The sleeper was...

    Bulgaria Narrow Guage Railway

As well as my rhodopi mountain adventure I took the day train from Bucharest to Sofia. 9 hours slowly trundling along through pretty boring scenery till you got to the Iskar Gorge. That was really impressive, towering cliffs on both sides and various hydroelectric installations on the river.

    Bulgaria Narrow Guage Railway

On holiday in Bulgaria's Rhodopi mountains and took the train from Velingrad to Avramovo, the highest station in the Balkans. Trundling up the inclines, tunnels and I think a couple of spirals. Great views of the forests and alpine meadows covered with wild flowers. All with the still snow...

3rd rail systems outside of the uk?

Ioved my trip on the Petite Train June. Open carriages and fantastic views. Sweltering at the bottom but definitely a bit nippy when we got to the top in the pyranese

    Trivia: Mispronounced station names

Trivia: Stations in settlements named after the Station

Bay Horse, near Lancaster. Think the station was named after the next door pub, situated in countryside not really near any of the existing villages. Now anything within a mile has a Bay Horse address. No actual village just isolated farms and houses.

What is a small radius curve?

They need some grease when I head out of Carnforth heading towards Skipton. It's worse than the fingernails down the blackboard.

    Trundling up the Douro

Had a little excursion up the Douro to Pinhao and then look a boat tour. Lovely old train and fantastic views of the river and vineyards. Was a bit hot but they kept things cool by keeping the train doors open

Examples of non-UK rail services run primarily/wholly for leisure travellers?

You defo need to do the old stock, particularly the open wagons if they are still running. The temperature change as you climb up towards the top is disconcerting, I was sweltering when I boarded but freezing at the top wishing I'd brought my jumper

Deal agreed between RMT and SWR regarding future role of guards

1618407199 Wasn't opposition to DOO all about critical safety issues. Presumably a cut in working hours and pay rise has resolved all those problems.

The Irregular Carlisle and Lancaster/Morecambe to Leeds Services

Not used this train from Lancaster to Leeds for work meetings for the last year but was about once a month before that. I see the 6:48am ex Lancaster now only goes as far as Skipton. Hope they've got rid of the bouncy freezing Pacers. The two hour trip abourd that was dreadful
