Why are heritage railways so inconsistent?

There are other less-obvious ways to be consistent, for instance the Midland Railway Butterley has a collection theme of ‘made in Derby’ so by that measure a Pacer operating alongside a Jinty is consistent.

What is going on at the Midland Railway Centre ?

Yes the Midland is the same as Middleton, or Crich, or Beamish, or even the Nene Valley etc where there is somewhere to pay as you enter their land (in Middleton's, the Nene Valley and MRC's case this is a railway ticket office). Locations that only offer a train ride such as the GCR or...

What is going on at the Midland Railway Centre ?

I wonder if I might just put a few things straight? Midland Railway Butterley is thankfully financially in the best state it has been for some years - and one of the reasons for this is that the opportunity for people to come on site without paying has been removed. Since the original museum...

Trains which run from mainlines onto heritage lines/limited routes

The Voyager actually came in by road because at that time the line had not been reopened from Wolsingham to Network Rail at Bishop Auckland

Trains which run from mainlines onto heritage lines/limited routes

That was in BR days when the Weardale line was still owned by BR and used for cement traffic. The line wasn’t fully opened in pres until 2010 and of course Northern was a later product of privatisation.

Trains which run from mainlines onto heritage lines/limited routes

Weardale Railway has received mainline tours - last was a King’s Cross to Stanhope as has Midland Railway Butterley which had a thumper visit on a rail tour. MRB has non- passenger moves on and off Network Rail almost daily.

    Midland Railway Centre - Butterley

Midland Railway Butterley is closed until February half term, partly due to a re-evaluation of the profitability of opening on certain days but also because the New Year holiday is being used to relay part of the main line near the Butterley Carriage Sheds. It is rather unfortunate that the...

Where to catch a Pacer on a heritage line?

The Midland Railway Butterley has been running a preserved Pacer for the last 17 years! 141113 was in public service for four days last week and is a regular performer. 1635770924 141113 at Midland Railway is the only one left in traffic and has worked 18 days since the railway reopened in July.

    Pacer popularity in preservation

There are 18 LMS Black Fives, 15 BR Standard 2-6-4 tanks, over 50 Class 117 DMU vehicles and something like 35 Class 37s preserved so multiples of any one type are not unusual in preservation. Pacer preservation will follow the pattern of first-gen, which currently shows around 50% of what has...

    BR Hospitality DMU

Ah yes, the Wickham. Ten years of our lives went into that, so thanks for the nice comments. It's actually now been in preservation service for 14 or so years! Better interior pictures http://llangollenrailcars.co.uk/56171.php http://llangollenrailcars.co.uk/50416.php

Dartmoor & Weardale Railways for sale

I'm surprised that no one has latched on the proposal to run a direct nightly Stanhope to London sleeper service, given that the coaches are already on site and being processed through the Wolsingham workshops. The idea is that people will visit The Auckland Project's attractions during the day...

Dartmoor & Weardale Railways for sale

I think you will find that the idea of a connecting Weardale to Darlington service is a very long-term aspiration for the new owners of Weardale and not something that will happen in the forseeable future.

    Dangerous Driving?

In which case I should be able to put a face to your description from HRA meetings, but funnily enough I can't. Neither do I recognise your description of discussions you say are taking place, nothing mentioned at any HRA meetings (or indeed TRA, to whom all DMU matters at HRA are referred)...

The future does not look good for 141108

Just to make it absolutely clear all the DMUs at Llangollen are either owned or leased by Llangollen Railcars Ltd, which is a completely independent charity which has no financial connection with the railway itself. See www.llangollenrailcars.co.uk for more information

    Dangerous Driving?

Would have thought being a railway operations manager, 26 years experience as a driver including being a trainer and assessor, an RO, Duty Manager, former Safety Officer, and participating in a few national committees on railway safety might give me the full picture, fireftrm., so what exactly...

Weardale Railway Diesel Gala April 17-19 Cancelled

From the Weardale Railway 'Regret to inform that due to the protracted process of transferring the railway to new owners it will not be possible to hold the diesel gala provisionally planned for the Weardale Railway for April 17-19. The Railway regrets the disappointment which this may cause...

    Dangerous Driving?

Iskra, the OP was making an allegation of an unsafe working practice. He's been answered by many people on here who are/have been qualified drivers of said traction, and in some cases quite senior operating officials, examiners and assessors but yet the discussion goes on, including statements...

    Dangerous Driving?

I do get a little irritated by discussions like this one. Changing tokens/tablets from the secondman's side of the cab while still moving has been done this way since DMUs were invented, which is why they are fitted with a DSD hold over button on that side of the cab. Should the driver choose to...

    Shortage of volunteers

As one 'on the sharp end' of organising one of our heritage railways I can perhaps put some more flesh on this discussion. Yes, there is a national shortage of volunteers. One of the biggest reasons for this is that the days of early retirement are now over. At one time we had a steady supply...
