    Royal Ordnance Factory Featherstone, Staffordshire

Sabre maps can be a useful source for 1940s ordinance sites. They would have been secret at one time and missing on OS maps of the period.

    What is a junction?

It's interesting to observe signs placed trackside at places such as Dolphin or Ruscombe Junctions. These are crossover points rather than bifurcations. I'm not sure for whom the signs are provided, rail staff or the general public.

Preserving ‘modern’ trams in working condition?

Presumably heritage trams use collector poles and modern ones a pantograph. The overhead wires would be set up differently. In Lisbon the classic trams have both and changeover at set points. Very happy to be educated about this.

    Longest surviving redundant signal structures

There was a signal post up on the disused Great Central viaduct in Leicester about ten years ago. I don't know if it is still there. There appears to be part of a signal gantry which has been cut down on the left as trains depart Marylebone.

Trivia: Platforms you cannot freely 'roam'

Scarborough: Walking down to the signal box caused two members of staff to follow us down the platform. They were discussing wether we were allowed to walk there or not. As far as I could tell there was no logical reason why we shouldn't have done that though trains rarely stop at that part of...

Isle of Wight steam railway purchases ownership of station.

That's interesting news, I visited Haven Street in the late eighties and have not been back to the island since.

My calculations came up with 22-20. Hopefully I didn't miss something though the players would have missed plenty.

Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railway Diesel Gala 4-6 April 2025

That departed with much clag engulfing nearby enthusiasts. I think the H&H livery looks ok ish.

First class cheaper than standard oddity

Over forty years ago I was involved in making travel arrangements in the army. Officers of the rank of Major or above had to travel in first class. Officers below that rank were to travel in 2nd class, unless they were (necessarily) travelling in uniform then they were to sit in 1st. These rules...

Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railway Diesel Gala 4-6 April 2025

I may give this a go. Twenty pounds a ticket on line or 25 on the day at a station. Two or three day rovers available on line only.

Stations that still have BR era (or older) signage

There is an interesting sign opposite the underpass at Pangbourne. It looks to be original GWR and warns that a footpath is private and not for public use.

K&ESR trials Gaming Carriage during May Half term holidays

When I saw this post I had visions of passengers playing roulette, black jack and fruit machines etc. Maybe putting something on the nags. Obviously I'm a bit behind the times. ;)

Stations that still have BR era (or older) signage

Stratford on Avon has BR era lighting with the station name on as have a few others mentioned on another thread a couple of years ago.

Paddington - Reading more signalling problems (05/03)

Things were getting back normal as I arrived at Slough this morning. The Didcot service was cancelled however and a 165 dashed past, presumably the unit for the Greenford service.

    New seat cushions for GWR...

Not quite full circle or they'd be stuffing them with horse hair!

    New seat cushions for GWR...

I don't expect the modern rail traveller is aware of how much give the seats of old had. A visit to a heritage railway would yield the answer. We will never go back to those levels of comfort on modern rolling stock of course. I welcome a return to a sprung cushion that is fire safe and recyclable.

Perhaps that was a bit too much. The line was: "You are going to regret putting us to so much trouble". Open floor.
