    TfGM Bus franchising

The Clipper ticket* has been back in business for a few years now I think, it's not a new Bee product. It's only for trams; I haven't seen anything suggesting it will be introduced on buses. *N.B. unlike the old Clippercards, Clipper is a ticket product that can be bought and loaded to a Get Me...

    Overcrowding during Easter

I was on the 1143 Norwich. It was indeed 6 cars, and full and standing in the front one - I dread to think what it was like at the back near the platform entrance. There were a lot of station staff on the platform, extra announcements to reassure Sheffield passengers that they could travel in...

    London Thameslink to Brighton

I was expecting something a bit wonky after asking for split tickets, and I would have been happy to go with it if a split ticket 1.) required a long way round and 2.) was much cheaper than the direct route. I'm glad I checked on this occasion!

    London Thameslink to Brighton

This is why I want to do it! The walk along Euston Road is clearly more sensible than a tour of west London; I was checking the validity of my ticket to start from St Pancras, since I'm not familiar with London Thameslink tickets. Thanks to @Joe Paxton for the advice.

    London Thameslink to Brighton

I'm struggling a little bit with the London Thameslink destination - I've never bought a fare using it before. My proposed tickets using this site's booking engine are as shown: [Manchester Piccadilly to London Euston, Advance Single, Avanti West Coast only, restriction VR London Thameslink to...

TfGM Accompanied Child fare on Metrolink

Sorry - Manchester Central Zone. Tickets from Greater Manchester stations to the city centre are issued to MANCHESTER CTLZ instead of MANCHESTER STNS, and as Watershed says they include zone 1 tram travel.

TfGM Accompanied Child fare on Metrolink

Yes, the difference in price is going to be pennies either way in most cases (the comparable ticket would be an off-peak travelcard for 90p) but I was interested in the edge case! Just wondering whether a definitive answer actually exists.

TfGM Accompanied Child fare on Metrolink

The TfGM Accompanied Child fare is valid to wherever the accompanying adult ticket is valid to, and isn't available if the adult ticket doesn't have a destination (i.e. Ranger, DaySaver or free pass). If the adult ticket is to MANCHESTER CTLZ (a non-rail destination), is the child ticket valid...

Th 21/10/21 IET hits PW Trolley left on line near Challow

Well there's my learning point for today, thank you!

Th 21/10/21 IET hits PW Trolley left on line near Challow

How can something be too light to activate a track circuit, isn't it a simple electric current? Track circuit operating clips are just a bit of metal, after all.

East Didsbury & Sale Water Park Metrolink Park & Rides

I've never seen Sale Water Park P&R more than about two thirds full. I've only been to East Didsbury P&R in the afternoons but there have always been spaces there as well. The south and west side P&Rs don't get the same overcrowding that the Bury line does.

Near miss with track workers at Eccles, 22 July 2021

The main thing that stood out for me was that the COSS was a fourth-level subcontractor (worked for a staffing agency, who supplied to the safety-critical staff provider, who supplied to the job contractors, who did the work for Northern Trains). This degree of subcontracting of staff was a...

NHS Cornwall Partnership posters in West Yorkshire

I've been sent a photo of a poster from Menston station, which refers to NHS services in Cornwall. Apparently the poster is also on display at Guiseley and Burley-in-Wharfedale. Did a poster putter-upper get lost or is there an unexpectedly large flow of commuter traffic between West Yorkshire...

Avanti Staff Refusing to Endorse Tickets During Disruption

A long time ago - when I had a lot more free time to sit around on trains and platforms! - I travelled Manchester to Stoke (Virgin Trains Only) and Stoke to London (London Midland Only) a few times. Almost double the end-to-end time of the direct train, but about ⅓ of the fare. And to come back...

    What 3 Words

These are some good points and something to be concerned about, definitely. It's not a meaningful criticism of the system itself - I can still imagine use cases for me personally and with friends - but it's a convincing argument against integrating it into public infrastructure.

    What 3 Words

I don't think anybody would suggest relying on this app for anything. It's just one way to turn your phone's location data into something human-readable to pass to somebody else (e.g. emergency services, friends trying to find each other). I can easily envisage using this during a 999 call if...

    What 3 Words

You're not physically at the exact centre of your postcode area. Searching just your postcode, instead of defining exactly where you are, will give you an inaccurate location - just like with any other mapping system. If you can't read then you probably can't use w3w, unless it has voice...

    What 3 Words

Only in as much as any other new app/website/service is designed to 'trap' you into their platform. It provides a mapping service which you can use if you like it; if you don't, or if you're communicating with someone who doesn't have it, you can just switch to Google Maps or grid refs or...

Carlisle. What can we do to spend 5 hours?

That's not a bad idea. I'm not familiar with Carlisle at all, don't think I've ever been - does much go through on a Sunday, and is there anywhere nice on the station to sit and watch? He's a big fan of Pendolinos, so they should keep him happy for a while!

Carlisle. What can we do to spend 5 hours?

Ah yes, that's the other thing, DalesRail only runs on summer Sundays so I assume anything good will be shut as well...
