I'd recommend double checking that your intended trains have First Class and Restaurant available before booking tickets. I'm quite certain they don't offer the full Restaurant service on Sundays.

You're right that Avanti must specifically be preventing Advance fares from being offered between Stafford and Preston, because if you look for the same trains from Wolverhampton to Preston, most, if not all of the time you'll be offered an Advance single.

My theory is that the Cross Country ones will have been more heavily used, as they run much longer routes (e.g. Edinburgh to Plymouth) than the Avanti ones did, meaning the Avanti ones will have had more dwell times.

Strange! I do like the look of the new menu. I've never used the Pullman Restaurant service before, but did use TFW many times before they started charging for food on top of the First Class fare.

That's not been the case since the timetable change. A different 220/221 comes off the shed at Bristol Temple Meads to form the Manchester. The 06:25 from Plymouth is now a single set throughout.

I strongly agree with you. I've always greatly preferred the (now ex) Avanti 221s to the Cross Country 220/221s. Apologies for going off topic, how many additional seats do the XC 5 cars have compared with the Avanti ones with Shops in? It's a shame they can't just bring the entire XC 220/221...

I didn't say it makes it correct or incorrect. Also I suspect the majority of staff are unaware that we're (allegedly) not supposed to proactively offer split tickets, unless they've been specifically told not to.
