Blackpool North customer service improved or same ?

According to the present entry on Wikipedia (which doesn't state the source of its information) there were over 1.7 million passenger entrances and exits in the period 2021/2022. According to the Realtime Trains website there appear to be five platforms in use throughout the day. Given the happy...

    Best looking/historic stations

A Big Shout Out For Manchester Oxford Road, in terms of both looks and historic interest. Historic Interest: The use of laminated wooden structures to reduce load over an early Victorian viaduct ( as opposed to using masonry, concrete, iron or steel). Architectural Interest: (i) English...

Stations that fell from grace- stations still in use today that once were significantly more impressive.

This is not an entirely accurate reply to the OP's question, but may provoke some debate. Buxton once had two stations side by side: one built and operated by the LNWR, and the other built and operated by the Midland Railway. The LNWR route went from Buxton to Manchester London Road (now...

Record-breaking 100+ hour delay? "You can travel on the Avanti service immediately after this train" ... in 5 days

Posts 74, 85 and 120 are thought-provoking. They are examples of good practice, which should be adhered to regardless of whether industrial action or possessions are taking place. The DfT, the TOCs and the relevant trade unions should agree a policy which, absent exceptional circumstances. does...

    Avanti West Coast cancellations

How does the Avanti pay structure operate? If Avanti reduce the frequency of their services (e.g. from Manchester Piccadilly to London Euston, and in the reverse direction) from three trains per hour to one train per hour, do the train staff suffer a reduction in salary?

Station platforms, it's gone too far, it's crossed a red line (literally)

I have very limited knowledge indeed, but would it be possible for there to be 'stop signs' for the drivers of 2-car, 3-car, 4-car, 5-car, 6-car etc etc trains to stop at - in the knowledge that enough doors would be appropriately placed?

Are Platform Edge Screens/Doors on Platforms 13 and 14 at Manchester Piccadilly a possibility?

    Manchester Victoria or Manchester Piccadilly

I know what you mean by your question: Manchester Victoria has loads of historical and architectural charm in terms of its frontage, tiled map and wooden-faced ticket offices, but has no 'buzz' or 'city gateway' feel to it - that was the point of my message.

    Manchester Victoria or Manchester Piccadilly

Manchester Piccadilly has a buzz about it, and a 'city gateway' feel to it. Manchester Victoria has neither. Manchester Oxford Road and Deansgate Stations have historical and architectural charm, and mean a lot to many mancunians.

    Manchester Victoria or Manchester Piccadilly

I should have dealt with the last part of Philip's question, namely - which station in Manchester first comes to mind. I suggest, tentatively, that it is Manchester Piccadilly [formerly Manchester London Road for this purpose] on the basis that there were more 'named' trains from...

    Manchester Victoria or Manchester Piccadilly

As a former resident in the south of Manchester, I preferred to use Manchester Piccadilly simply because my local train service went directly to and from there - and it was nearer to my place of work than Manchester Victoria. Further, by using Manchester Piccadilly, I could reach every station...

Should disused lines and preserved lines be reopened for freight use, to help provide capacity?

The replies on here so far are mostly one-way: there is no arguable case for utilising heritage or preserved railways for anything other than their existing purpose, and no case at all for transporting perishable or frozen foodstuffs by any rail routes. However, to refine the argument a little...

West Coast To East Coast Connectivity

I have raised this issue before under a different title, and learned a lot from the knowledgeable replies. I hope it's not too soon to revisit the issue. Is there now a better case for re-opening the line between Glazebrook East Junction and Skelton Junction to permit an hourly through service...

Moving somewhere within 1hr commute of Manchester City Centre

Wilmslow has plenty of green open spaces, is a few minutes' drive from nice countryside and good shopping (if that is a consideration) at Handforth Dean and Cheadle Royal - and its station is served by Avanti, Arriva Wales and Northern. Avanti do the journey to Manchester Piccadilly in 19 or so...

    Trivia. Freight Avoiding Lines UK.

Northenden Junction to Hazel Grove High Level Junction, avoiding Manchester and Stockport, using initially what I think was a short stretch of a former Cheshire Lines Committee route before joining a former Midland Railway route. As far as I am aware it has been used exclusively for freight...
