The Social Railway - Don't InterCity operators have such responsibilities too? XC bosses in particular, I'm thinking of you.

And insane house prices in the traditional commuter belt mean commuting from intercity stations with reasonable nearby house prices, like Peterborough and Stafford.

LNER to pilot removal of Off-Peak tickets

I looked at next Friday and the LNER website wouldn't allow me to buy an off-peak travelcard. Though, on the other hand, I don't get the semi-flexible tickets on this flow, so maybe I can still buy it at a ticket office. Quite confusing.

LNER to pilot removal of Off-Peak tickets

Whelp, looks like I'll need to do Advances for my weekly commute on Fridays from Peterborough to London. No more off-peak travelcards, it seems.

LNER to pilot removal of Off-Peak tickets

I travel once a week from Peterborough to Farringdon. I normally buy an Off-Peak Day Travelcard Zones 1-6, which allows me to take Thameslink if needed. And I did because LNER was delayed for a long time because of problems up north. LNER-only tickets are a recipe for disaster.

HS2 Manchester leg scrapped: what should happen now?

Thank you. I was worried, as the current Stafford to London via Birmingham services are awfully slow.

HS2 Manchester leg scrapped: what should happen now?

I am wondering if Stafford will get better journey times or worse ones after HS2 Phase 1, given that it seems that HS2 trains would go via Birmingham?

FANTASY: redesign your own TOC's timetable

I compared them as they're both outer suburban stations and they're close to an intercity station with many more services (Reading and Peterborough). Though, maybe the Trent Valley stations would be a better comparison.

FANTASY: redesign your own TOC's timetable

I swear there was a train to Newbury between 5pm and 7pm, which did stop at Maidenhead. Though, Newbury isn't a city. The main fantasy was for Huntingdon to have a fast train journey to and from London. LNER is far more reliable and having a sub 40 minute journey time for Huntingdon would be...

FANTASY: redesign your own TOC's timetable

In my fantasy, I’d have Huntingdon served by fast LNER services in a similar manner to some Trent Valley stations being served by Avanti. And Maidenhead has some IC services too, so why not? But I’d suspect that pathing would make that impossible in reality.

    Travel experiences during Storm Babet

My journey to and from work (Peterborough-Farringdon) was possible, but it meant not using LNER at all in both directions. The way to work was plain sailing. A direct Thameslink train and that was that. On the way back, I chanced going via King's Cross and was told that nothing was running from...

Why people DO travel by train...

Commuting from Peterborough to London every day is feasible if done on the train, not the case when driving all the way.

RMT sets out talks ‘road map’ as rail services hit by fresh strike

I am one of those people. Thameslink from Huntingdon has been an utter joke and my mother has been constantly late for work. We only moved to Peterborough for the more reliable service by LNER. I had thought of moving to the traditional commuter belt when I would have more income, but given how...

RMT sets out talks ‘road map’ as rail services hit by fresh strike

No Thameslink services at all today. What a farce. Good thing we moved to Peterborough, as otherwise my mother would have no way to get to her work.

Controversial railway opinions (without a firm foundation in logic..)

Huntingdon and St Neots should have an hourly LNER service, at least. Thameslink's reliability gets rather patchy so far out of London. As it stands, my mother and I took the risk to move to Peterborough to have the nice, fast and reliable LNER. :{ (I like Peterborough. It's just that my...

Controversial railway opinions (without a firm foundation in logic..)

Really? Interesting. I guess another issue is that such a station won’t ever be served by LNER, so my mother would still drive to the main station to avoid Thameslink.

Controversial railway opinions (without a firm foundation in logic..)

Interesting. Holme would be too far and remote, then, with regular buses from Yaxley and Hampton to Peterborough. And I guess only Thameslink would serve the theoretical southern station. Another alternative is either a guided busway to the station or an actual metro. As much as I like my city...

Controversial railway opinions (without a firm foundation in logic..)

Peterborough definitely needs a second station to the south near Yaxley/Farcet/Hampton. Otherwise, as it stands, one would need to drive to the city centre and then go back south via rail.

    Commuting 'not coming back': Harper

Not to mention the time savings, especially for longer distance commuters. The door-to-door journey of car + rail + tube+ walk is just under 2 hours each way, usually about 1hr40min. The car journey all the way is easily 3 hours plus. Time is money after all.

    Commuting 'not coming back': Harper

Well, long-distance commuting from places like Peterborough, Grantham and Newark to London is definitely alive and well. Every day, as well. But I know that LNER is not a commuter operator and the commutability is due to fast journey times more than anything.

Is Britain really the sick man of Europe?

One thing I don’t like in Spain regarding rail travel, is that intercity frequencies are rather poor compared to the UK. Figueres to Barcelona should be more frequent, but alas, I had to take the slow train all the way many times as it’d be faster than waiting for the fast train. On the other...
