    InterCity 225 diagrams after December

I avoid the 225s wherever possible because of the lack of legroom - it's reasonable at most seats on an Azuma and the tables are high enough and don't have a bar underneath - again, better than the 225s. My heart always sinks when I open up the seat plan and there is no coach A.

    XC Voyager Refurbishment

I think the base design is alright. It's the awful turquoise and grey which really makes it look awful.

Combined transport authority in the north

Yes, the local rail network can easily be divvied up into north-west, Yorkshire, and north-east. Getting politicians within each of these areas to agree to work together, on the other hand, is quite difficult. In London, this was achieved by the LPTB being given a high level of power independent...

LNER ASLEF strike on 20th April

It's considered scabbing - on Twitter, an LNER driver was saying that he heckled a DM at Kings Cross for scabbing. Also, it has been suggested that contingent drivers and train managers may not be as competent due to lesser training and limited time on the frontlines.

    June 2024 Timetable Change

It's part of GWR's overall branding - one of nostalgia.

    Grand Central stranding passengers (28/03)?

And it'll be interesting to see what approach to GC iSquared will have. They may be less tolerant to losses.

Combined transport authority in the north

They could be taken into TPE? I think local politicians are incapable of working together for the common (transport) good. It needs bribery for the different areas (like in Manchester) or it needs a powerful transport authority (London). The easiest area to take into local control would be the...

Hertford North -Should the frequency increase, with a return of the Semi-Fasts?

I agree, although Grange Park could merit a full service given the housing in the area and distance to alternatives. Crews Hill is similar for now, but is slated for a considerable housing development in the future.

    Conwy Valley Line

It makes it easier if you run the things you can more frequently i.e. buses. Once you get them more frequent, you can change the things they're connecting to to your hearts content and it'll work out.

Hertford North -Should the frequency increase, with a return of the Semi-Fasts?

The demand from Enfield Chase southwards is always going to be stunted on 2tph. For people used to Piccadilly line frequencies, it's not an attractive service, particularly given you may need to change trains to reach your destination, and be careful with your connecting tubes in the other...

Rail services to be included as part of Bee Network: how should this be achieved?

Quite. And the effects that would have on platform capacity and stock utilisation could be pretty severe, I would have thought?

    Labour's Plan for buses

Aside from a few notable exceptions, there is little growth in bus service provision. If current trends continue, it will become increasingly impossible to live anything resembling a modern life if relying on the bus, particularly in the towns and villages.

People buying houses with associated noise (churches, railways etc) and then complaining about the noise?

Hyde Park is a complete student ghetto. Headingley is on its way to that sort of environment but seems to have fewer disruptive students. My bugbear living near the stadium in Headingley was not the noise from the flightpath into Leeds Bradford, nor the two churches with bells within earshot...

    National Train Driver Day

Everyone should salute you in the street and thank you for your service to your country like they do with veterans in America <:D

    National Train Driver Day

I look forward to the RMT creating a national Guard/Train Manager/Conductor day, and TSSA creating an entire week of celebration for booking office workers... The reality of the matter is that drivers do end up being a bit lionised on the railway. In the grand scheme of things, their...

Beeching Cuts and the Big Four

I suppose, hypothetically, had the analysis been done (even in say, 1935) most of the wagonload traffic would be uneconomical, even with a generous view of cost allocation? Was there any great amount of wagonload traffic in the 1950s which could probably have covered its own costs, even in the...

Why are XC allowed to continue?

Density can’t go much higher, even with new seats. The big issues are the accessible toilets, the crumple zones and the wasted cabs. Densifying would also make the Voyager experience even more unpleasant.

Beeching Cuts and the Big Four

Do we have any idea whether wagonload freight and sundries ever broke even postwar, or were they already doomed as concepts? Was a cost vs revenue analysis done on wagonload freight before the Beeching era?

WCRC loses judicial review in High Court

Yes, I don't get this assumption that all 100 need to be upgraded. Just enough to reinstate the Jacobite and get the revenue from that, get the cash flow going, then work on an appropriate number of carriages for charter work.

Speculation: East Yorkshire to launch competition on York - Selby route?

Depends how successful they are in franchising. In the event of not winning any franchises in West Yorkshire, the nearest Arriva operating areas will be the coast road from Scarborough to Teeside, Derby, and Merseyside. Therefore a lot of the fixed costs such as management, admin, maintenance...
