Fire at Saltburn cliff lift (15/01/2024)

Please can we call it the Saltburn Cliff Tramway rather than just “lift”. All recent official publications use tramway. Lift to me sums up a feature enclosed on four sides. The Saltburn tramway is the oldest water balanced operational tramway in the U.K.

[Triva] What is the longest rail journey between two stations that use to be directly connected but now aren't?

I can confirm that the Whitby Scarborough journey is still being requested on a daily basis. This summer the X93 and X94 bus services have often been full (because of the £2 fare) and passengers have decided to investigate a rail return journey; after all there is a rail station at their...

Worst Railway Journeys in the UK

I would second this choice, especially as I can still remember it in its prime with flourishing industry and with a variety of ex LNER steam engines at every turn.

    Historic National Express Routes

It was service 440, worked by Silver Service (Wooliscrofts) of Darley Dale via Derby and Leicester.

Stations that fell from grace- stations still in use today that once were significantly more impressive.

Redcar Central (although there are plans to spend substantial amounts on it)

County Lines Drug Dealing and the Railway

Last year I became concerned about a young person on the station for some considerable time. Saw a pcso who agreed to investigate. Turned out to be an autistic person who was unable to return home with his family in car because of travel sickness. He was able to produce a travel ticket, but...

Trouble at t'Whitby last night? (20/02/23)

What about passengers at intermediate stations such as Glaisdale or Lealholm?

Trouble at t'Whitby last night? (20/02/23)

Unfortunately the crew would normally be a driver and a conductor. Nobody to turn to for help, booking office closed at this time of day. Unusual for there to be a problem on a Monday night though. Fridays and Saturdays sometimes warrant presence of security staff.

Busiest station with fewer than one t.p.h.?

Whitby is an unusual example. Out of season trains are quiet except for the 8.30am arrival and the 4.00pm departure which carry the school children. As these are travelling on “contract” tickets are their numbers recorded in the published numbers of user? In season the line is much better...

King Charles visit to York and Doncaster

Yesterday (Wednesday) the king and Queen consort visited York and then Doncaster, both cities with strong rail connections. Although I have searched newspaper reports I cannot find any indication of how they made their journeys. Was it by royal train? Or by polluting road transport?

Trivia: Station pairs with a direct service between them but minimal demand

Whitby has two departures a day (around 12.00 and 16.00) booked through to Hexham. I doubt very much that there are through travellers from ANY station in the Esk valley to any of the stations beyond Newcastle, with maybe the exception of Metrocentre. Through running is for operational...

How does the lack of direct train services between large towns in Northern England compare with the South?

I can confirm that the second most asked question at Whitby station is “when is the next train to Scarborough?”

Trivia: from which stations can you see/hear your train coming when it's still miles away?

Tan y Bwlch on the Ffestiniog. You can hear the train whistling long before it arrives (but can’t see it through the trees!)

What do you miss from the days of long distance steam travel?

I can vividly remember from some time in the early sixties a journey from Saltburn to Peterborough late at night in winter which involved a change of train at Darlington. The waiting room seemed to have a lofty ceiling, but a porter kept the coal fire well topped up with loco coal. Our...

Great British Railways - Competition for new location of GBR Headquarters

Disappointed that nobody has yet suggested Redcar. Huge brownfield site of the former steelworks, just made bigger last month by demolition of the iconic Dorman Long tower. Enterprising (Tory) mayor. Close to Stockton with its railway history. Just across the river from Hartlepool (Tory gain...

    Hydrogen trains for Whitby ?!

The main objections to the proposal was that onward travel beyond Middlesbrough could result in up to 50 min wait for a connection at Middlesbrough. There is currently a demand for through services from Whitby to Newcastle and vice versa.

    Hydrogen trains for Whitby ?!

Just to bring this thread back on track (hydrogen trains) I note that Northern have announced that they are withdrawing the proposed May timetable change to remove the onward services beyond Middlesbrough to Sunderland, Newcastle and Hexham. This means that plan to have the Whitby service as a...

Someone has used my address for dodging a fare

Assuming that the address and postcode were correct I would assume in the first instance that the person concerned once lived at your address. If, when being questioned, I was asked for an address I could easily give a false address and postcode from memory, rather than make one up on the spur...

    Strangest long distance through trains

The May timetable proposals will see an end to this. Would have been an interesting journey a couple of years ago when it was scheduled for a Pacer
