    Setting Trailing Points

Not sure if this is the right place or not but seems most relevant. I'm starting as a shunter soon and trying to get an idea of how hand points work. I understand in the facing direction, gap to the left= route set for left and gap to right= right side route set. How does this work in the...

Avanti Qualified Drivers - Euston, Wolves and Liverpool (06/03/2024)

Interesting, those “terms” seem like a Dft’s dream. Does anyone know if the other ex Virgin TOCs such as XC/LNER have the same appalling terms, I think spare moment is the same but unsure about that floating spare week nonsense. 1709896070 Think if all that junk was implemented at my TOC, I’d...

    Lumo - Qualified Driver - Newcastle (17/01/24)

In what sense? are the GWR units more reliable now with the extra power? Sorry a bit of topic!

    Lumo - Qualified Driver - Newcastle (17/01/24)

Makes sense, the extra power is required for the TPE units with the steep climbs over the pennines. They would struggle with 750bhp.

    Lumo - Qualified Driver - Newcastle (17/01/24)

The 802s have the more powerful 940bhp engines where the 800s were 750bhp AIUI. Same engines just different engine map.

Storm Isha may affect your journey in parts of England, Scotland and Wales on Sunday 21 and Monday 22 January

I was driving today through some of the worst of it and I must say I was really impressed with the communications about the blanket speed restrictions, obviously these were in the late notice case but the signallers on route all put out general broadcasts as you went through the different cells...

    Lumo - Qualified Driver - Newcastle (17/01/24)

Well I'd say one being an EMU and the other a Bi-mode is quite significant. Probably one or two things below solebar but visually they are all much of a muchness as you say.

    Trainee Driver Pass Out Rate

We had 11 on my course and we all passed out, a couple did struggle but got there in the end. As other posters have mentioned, if you apply yourself and put in the hard work you will pass, it's an intense year or so but well worth it in the long run. If there is anything you are unsure about...

LNER ASLEF 5 day strike - cancelled

This is reassuring news, lets hope this can be the turning point for some sensible dialogue in the wider dispute. Most knew MSL would be unworkable at ground level, lets hope this goverment now realises this and stops wasting taxpayers money and hurting the wider economy in dragging this dispute...

    Lumo - Qualified Driver - Newcastle (17/01/24)

DOO would be the big one. The latter both pay more and have guarded work without any of the "ambassador" work. Not wishing to split hairs but 803s are very different from 802s :D Anyway it's horses for courses, it sounds like RollingStock19 is enjoying life at Lumo so that's good to hear.

    Lumo - Qualified Driver - Newcastle (17/01/24)

Good point, I'd forgotten about that. You've mentioned that a few times, from previous experience of corporate dinners, they are sometimes better eaten alone rather than spending hours talking about work, outside of work with questionable company :D You'd have to be completely mad to leave...

    Lumo - Qualified Driver - Newcastle (17/01/24)

I think you've answered your own question really- it isn't economically viable to use a finite resource (that's expensive) to do a job that can be done at a fraction of the cost. It's basic economics, drivers are better utilised doing what they are paid to do.. driving trains! This provides the...

    Lumo - Qualified Driver - Newcastle (17/01/24)

Goodness, that's shocking. No disrespect to any train cleaners, they do a wonderful job for low pay but utlising a driver to help clean the train isn't the most cost efficient way of doing things.

ASLEF announce five days of strike action on LNER due to potential implementation of Minimum Service Law

You are thinking it through too much, no one cares (other than you, clearly) what class of train is on a press release. They've used that stock header image for all previous releases, so why would they put a class 800 on this one!? 1705692182 This.

    Lumo - Qualified Driver - Newcastle (17/01/24)

Do Lumo drivers do "other duties" when travelling pass? I know there were talks of ticket checking when they first launched as part of the role. It is probably a decent role for someone working DOO looking to get into an Intercity role, or freight drivers. Wouldn't imagine they would tempt many...

ASLEF announce five days of strike action on LNER due to potential implementation of Minimum Service Law

However, Labour won't want the strikes to carry on should they not be settled by the time they take power. Most trade unions have an affiliation with the Labour party, as a result, long running disputes are definitely less likely than a tory party that's a total spent force. Look at Wales as an...

ASLEF announce five days of strike action on LNER due to potential implementation of Minimum Service Law

Guessing you haven't seen the latest polls then? It's not a matter of "if" it's when, there is no way this shower will get back in. I know plenty of torie voters (even some previous members) who won't vote for them after the debacle they've presided over the last 13 years. Under 50s will vote...

    Reliability of electrified lines

I’d guess it been the latter. The routes where I have issues with track circuits and need to be talked passed signals the most are either Absolute Block or older colourlight areas with lesser traffic than the OLE areas. You can tell the line side equipment isn’t as modern, but some of these are...

TPE Nova 3 (Class 68 + Mk5s) updates and withdrawal from service

Surely these sets will find a new home. I can think of quite a few operators who could use these to remove their old unreliable, aging fleet. But it comes down to who can afford them, I suppose. As mentioned the 68s will likely return to DRS. I know the MK5a are cleared for 125mph running...

This. Maybe there were not enough applicants that met the criteria they are looking for.
