Avanti west coast seat reservation question

Which is a fantastic experience for passengers who've gone to the toilet or buffet. If only people thinking what technology can do would remember just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should.

    Ticket Office at London Bridge.

Yes, you will walk straight past it going to St Thomas St.

Off Peak Return, restriction code 8A

I often break (and resume) a journey with similar tickets at Colwyn Bay. You'll have no problem with this at all, and the barrier staff at Colwyn Bay (I use it 4-5 times a week) are great - the sort that get to know their regular passengers. I doubt the restriction would be enforceable even if...

Do deep-level Tube trains have heating?

Likewise, and judging from the confused appearing passengers in that video, neither had they. I'd doubt it was used much at all. Perhaps they shouldn't have removed the door open buttons from the stock that had them, with them they could be passenger open above ground in bad weather, but...

[Trivia] Passenger Trains That Often Carry No Passengers For Entire Route

That sometimes passes me on the coast path, and the times I've looked up it's seemed like it might be empty. The early morning trains in the other direction tend to have a fair few passengers (often including me!) I've not done it for a long time but I can't imagine inbound to Llandudno sees...

Progress on Avanti West Coast's 805/807s Hitachi AT300 sets

On Voyagers they're movable on tracks rather than fixed to the sidewall, which is a nicely thought out little design, but probably not obvious at all. I can't think of another train with similar.

Passenger loading late at night on rural branches

The stops before Bangor (Conwy, Penmaenmawr and Llanfairfechan) are no longer request stops, that was changed late last year.

Minimum value possible on Oyster Card

Positive balances and unclaimed deposits also exist of course. Over half a billion quid's worth at the last count, so negative balances will pale into complete insignificance by comparison. "The latest Transport for London (TfL) figures from June 2023 show there are more than 83 million Oyster...

Minimum value possible on Oyster Card

That's the whole basis of this thread - where to go to make it as expensive as possible. It's not a "loophole," it's how Oyster works. It has no idea where you're going to until you tap out there, which is why negative balances have to exist. All that happens is the card balance is updated. The...

Minimum value possible on Oyster Card

I think for a barrier touch in you need to have a minimum balance of whatever the lowest single fare is (from that station?), so if I'm right about that you'd need to top them up first. If you wanted to then get them as negative as you could, go to the most far flung destination? In the past I'd...

CAF Civity for TfW: News and updates on introduction.

Fantastic theory, however in practice what happens is of this Sunday. A 197 broke down on Anglesey so there was no west bound service all morning, and very little east. This affected not only TFW with their whizzy new splittable trains, but also Avanti with their old fashioned splittable trains.

    North Wales Main Line Electrification

I'm all for rail to new destinations, but what would be the point of branches to Llanberis and Bethesda? Both would be happy with a decent bus service to Caernarfon / Bangor.

More Delay for HS2, and how should we proceed?

That's fine - the 3m people in Wales live in an area the size of Wales.

More Delay for HS2, and how should we proceed?

Some have assumed it would be, I think based on something HS2 Ltd said years ago about compulsory reservations, coupled with a bit of "it's what the TGV/ICE does." I don't think you can safely assume anything at all about how HS2 will be operated - at the same time it was said to be...

More Delay for HS2, and how should we proceed?

I don't think it being stupid is a given - I'd say a cancellation announcement would be popular with most Tory voters, and also a significant amount of Labour voters! "Grassroots tories" have wanted it pared back or scrapped for a long, long time.

Bus stop timetables - whose responsibility?

Or, if your Local Authority is Conwy, there will be a team doing nothing. Every bus stop still has "we can't provide times due to Covid, scan this QR code" on them. For the 4th year, in the area in Wales with the highest proportion of elderly residents. The QR code doesn't work, apparently, and...

Avanti West coast contract extended to 1st April 2023

Sorry, but that is blatant codswallop. ASLEF is and has been for a long time one of the least militant, and least political, unions. As far as political activism goes they're akin to to the non-TUC affiliated civil service unions.

Why has electrification not got further in the UK?

Hello, I'm the nobody who will. I think there are few routes left which justify electrification, and those few don't justify anything like a "rolling plan of electrification." It sounds like a massive expense over a very long time for no benefit.

    "Rail.Ninja": un-accredited UK ticket retailer?

No idea if they're "accredited" or not (whatever that actually means, it's a term often used here with no explanation), but I'd be wary of any retailer who has "Are we legit" (sic) in their list of customer service questions.

Why are some stations designated as 'request' stops?

Well, not with the usual 15 minute wait at Junction on the Blaenau train, when they bother running it. How do you explain all the stations between Junction and Holyhead? The train will depart Holyhead on its return whenever it's timetabled to.
