Oslo to Gothenburg 26 June 2025

There is a bit of major construction in Varberg. The line through Varberg is one of two remaining single track portions of the West Coast line. A new double track tunnel under the town has been built and in June and early July everything will be closed in order to connect the tunnel and the new...

    Brexit matters

If having a single local MP is important, the additional member system is probably the best option. Although you can also argue that having 10 local MPs is better than just a single one.

Finland "plans to" change to standard gauge

Do rail ploughs work on concrete sleepers?

Finland "plans to" change to standard gauge

It has been closed for a while due to electrification, but now it's open again and is used. This is how it looked like before the electrification: https://maps.app.goo.gl/hPa7siDUr7Mx3yhDA

Finland "plans to" change to standard gauge

Yes, but you have to use four rails.

VY is looking to lease locomotives, probably for the Oslo-Copenhagen trains with a possible extension to Germany. https://ted.europa.eu/en/notice/-/detail/320822-2025

How to find the fare of a walk up Finland intercity train ticket

I don't think VR offers flexible tickets for intercity trains. But an existing ticket can be rebooked for another departure at a cost.

Unable to reserve seats Copenhagen - Hamburg

It's probably not possible yet. My guess is that they don't know what trains they will use on the route in November.

Finland "plans to" change to standard gauge

Haparanda station is built for easy changes between Swedish and Finnish trains, but it makes the trip a bit more complicated. I'd not bet any money on Finland regauging their entire network, but they are also looking at building a couple of standard gauge lines in the north, which makes sense in...

Oslo to Gothenburg 26 June 2025

Another option might be train/bus to Strömstad, bus to Halden and then train to Oslo.

    London to Switzerland direct?

Looking at a random date next week I see 21 daily flights from Zürich, 6 daily flights from Basel and 14 daily flights from Geneva to London. Most of them on planes from the A320-family as well as some A220 or Embraers, so there is probably enough demand to fill a train or two.

    London to Switzerland direct?

They could add a stop in Marne-la-Vallée Chessy/Disneyland.

For now, but SJ has shown interest in operation Oslo-Copenhagen trains as soon as their new high speed trains are delivered.

Trivia: runways or taxiways that cross railways

There has been two airports in Sweden with a level crossing on the runway. Visby airport, the railway crossed both taxiway and runway. Train drivers had to stop before crossing the airport and call the tower and ask for permission. And Söderhamn Air Force base. There was a railway running...

    Internal Swedish sleeper (Malmö-Stockholm)

The last time I took the Malmö-Stockholm sleeper you could stay on the train until 07:00, but that can change so double check with the train staff.

    Easter Weekend in Europe

I guess that in most countries easter means a lot of engineering works as it is a pretty long period with less daily commuters than usual.

    European Defence spending and strategy

Or maybe try to hack some Russian TV-stations and broadcast a selection of Eurovision entries from the last years? Like the Irish entry from last year.

    European Defence spending and strategy

Sounds a bit like arming the Eurovision Song Contest might be the easiest way to solve it :D Turkey and Hungary as already left it and Russia has been expelled. As a bonus there is Australia, we just need to invite Canada and we might have something.

    Stockholm - Narvik direct service

SJ's website is a bit unclear about the food options to Narvik. https://www.sj.se/en/about-the-journey/food-and-drinks/food-on-sj-night-train On one hand it says "On the night train to Jämtland, Luleå and Narvik you'll find the same selection of food and drinks as on SJ High-speed trains." But...

    Stockholm - Narvik direct service

The menu can be found on the Swedish website: https://www.sj.se/allt-om-resan/mat-pa-taget/bistromeny Use translation software of your choice if you don't speak Swedish (I recommend DeepL). I think the bistro car continues to Narvik if you take the direct train.
