So many announcements, so few people taking them on board

Last year I travelled by rail from Nuremberg to Sheffield. As far as London, I didn't have to endure a single 'safety' (sic) announcement (and I can understand German). Between STP and Sheffield, there were 13. But then, of course, rail travel in the UK kis much more dangerous than the rest of...

30% of TPE services cancelled Thursday 8 June

Train guaurd reporting 'structural damage to SB and could be a long time before line reopens'. 1686221967 ..but just opened! 1211 to Liverpool ex Sheffield running. 1686222155 My wife got as far as Chinley East Jun, did the rare crossover (!), sent back to Sheffield, and is now on the 1211 back...

30% of TPE services cancelled Thursday 8 June

0824 Cleethrorpes -Liverpool apparently terminated at Chinley East Junction and sent bcak to Sheffield. TPEs website says disruption until at least 1215 but reversing a train suggests that's very ambitious.

30% of TPE services cancelled Thursday 8 June

Just heard from my wife, who is on an a TPE service at Edale, that Chinley SB is on fire! Possibility according to guard of line being closed being closed for rest of day. EMR service behind hers already terminated at Sheffield and RTT is already litteered with cancellations. Will no doubt...

Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland - Timetables?

I write as an FR member. I am extremely disappointed with the FR and WHR's dramatic reduction in services and, more to the point, the drastic reduction in journey opportunities provided. I am well aware, as a member of two other hereritge lines, of the cost and other pressures that the sector is...

    The introduction of ticket machines

Presuambly the question relates to self-service machines rather than ones in booking offices. On BR, as opposed to LT, there were a few mechanical machines; some built by Setright, better known for their bus ticket machines, were used at, from memory, Broad Street in the 1970s. These allowed...

    Glastonbury festival in BR days.

Not Glastonbury, but I went to the 'Bath Festival' in July 1970 (great music, lousy sound system) and left around 0300 on Saturday when it started raining and I was getting tired. This was at the Bath and West Showground site at Shepton Mallet. Local coach firms were running a shuttle to Castle...

Cross-City line 1982 - lack of Redditch services off peak

The pre-1981 service was a legacy of Beeching. In 1965 the whole local service south of Birmingham and the Redditch branch were propsoed for closure. The Minister refused permission (some journeys, e.g. Redditch to Selly Oak, would have been very difficult by bus, and buses weree badly affected...

    Merrymaker Fares 1970's ?

The first one I did was Sheffield to Edinburgh for (I think) £2- multiply by about 12 for 2022 values, so very cheap. They ran form Sheffield Division until 1981. The division also offered very cheap round tris bys ervice trains- the last one I di in Autumn 1981 was Sheffield-Exeter-Waterloo- St...

    New services from Timetable World

    1. The paper on the TW reprints is of much beter quality than the originals- sone of my 1950s books are crumbly and a bit smelly(!) - I think the binding glue has had its chips too- and the excellent TW ones solve that problem. 2. In general through trains, or portions, were indicated by a note...

5 1/2 day working week - when did extra peak trains on Saturday stop?

Saturday working tailed off quite rapidly in the 1960s. In Birmingham , where I grew up, big shops were always open on Saturday afternoons- I have an idea that afternoon closure was a London thing. The rail replacement bus services which were insisted on for the Beeching-era closures of some...

Manchester Piccadilly manual ticket inspection logic

I believe the guys at Piccadilly are private security staff, not NR/TOC employees? Last Friday I travelled from Hereford to Sheffield. The connection to Sheffield- I realised after I had booked the Hereford-Stockport leg- was the 2142 from MCR which doesn't call at Stockport (it was originally...

    Rail electrification scrapped / 'suspended'?

Indeed I did! Sorry for the typo.

    Rail electrification scrapped / 'suspended'?

A number of thoughts. 1. The claim by Grayling that bi-modes are as fast as electrics is an outright lie. He was disastrous as a prisons minister and is proving to be so on transport. 2. The closeness of this announcement to the HS2 contracts being let rubs salt in the wound; the concerns that...

Breich - Public Consultation on Station Closure

Altnabreac etc are rather different cases as there is no road access. In fact I believe Kildonan is the least used station on the Far North Line. A curiosity about Breich is that it was the last staion on BR to reatin the 'Halt' suffix to its name.

Trivia. Where is the most memorable location where you have eaten on a train.

High Tea on the West Highland line in 1971, going up the Monessie Gorge. 3 staff and 4 passengers, I seem to remember.
