Buying house near track - Crofton Park station

I know the area well. If you don't like trains, don't buy the property. You'll have trains constantly between 5.30am and 1am. Almost all the trains are EMUs, which are really quiet, you'll hardly hear them. You'll get the occasional diesel=hauled freight or engineer train. They are noisy, but so...

Trivia - Stations visible from within other stations

You can see Waterloo from Charing Cross, but they are not on the same line. Also I think you can see Cannon Street from Blackfriars, but there is no service between the two

    Roll-paper Rubbing the Deltics

I travelled several times from Manchester to York to see the trains and the NRM, enjoying class 40, 45 and 47 haulage over the Pennines via Huddersfield and also the Hope Valley Line. I remember Bank Holiday Saturdays at York in the late 70s with northbound Deltics arriving every hour it seemed...

Trivia, which stations were closest to each other?

If you include TFL stations, there are a whole load on the former East London Line, now the Highbury and Islington to West Croydon line, that are less than half a mile apart. Highbury and Islington - Canonbury Dalston Junction - Haggerston Haggerston - Hoxton Shadwell - Wapping Wapping -...

Trivia: Competing TOCs that serve the same route

Thameslink also covers part of the same route - London Bridge to Norwood Jcn, and the route is served by TfL and Southern. Thameslink goes on to serve East Croydon alongside Southern services and then out to Horsham, which is also served by Southern.

    Best lines to drive/travel

Lines with good views? Birmingham New Street to Wolverhampton. Magnificent industrial history, with a unique set of views and interactions with the canals of the heroic canal age. New Cross/Greenwich to London Bridge/Cannon Street/Blackfriars/Charing Cross. A grade II listed building for the...

Have your tickets been checked on your journey?

Ticket barriers manned and in operation today at London Bridge, East Croydon, Horsham, and Clapham Junction. No onboard train ticket checks or sales on the Southeastern, Southern and Thameslink services I used. Plenty of dispatch staff at East Croydon, London Bridge, and Clapham Junction.

Trivia: Journeys between stations that are quicker to walk

Crofton Park is served exclusively by Thameslink trains via Elephant and Castle. It's quicker to walk from any of the neighbouring stations served by Southern, TfL and Southeastern to Crofton Park, these include Honor Oak, Forest Hill, Brockley, New Cross Gate, Ladywell, St Johns and New Cross.

Trivia: Nearest station you haven't used?

Like OP I've never used Nunhead, and also New Beckenham, which are two and 4 miles from me. I've passed through Nunhead often and even got off the train once to admire the view from the platform. But I've never entered or exited the station.

Cannon Street to Sevenoaks trains, stopping at Petts Wood and Orpington, have been rerouted via Park Bridge Junction and ladywell Loop and then from New Beckenham to Beckenham Junction via Beckenham Spur.

If you had £500m to spend on closed Northern rail lines

If you had £500m to spend on reopening closed railway lines in the North of England, which ones would you concentrate on (and why)? And how far do you think that money will take you?

Southeastern revenue staff making an appearance

This is all very interesting! If fare dodging is at 2.5% (of passengers or revenue? But doesn't really matter) then it is a very small problem. SE carried 183.2m passengers in 2018/19 FY, so 2.5% gives 4.5m fare-dodging journeys, which sounds a lot. Make another big assumption of £6 lost for...

Southeastern revenue staff making an appearance

It was mentioned earlier in the string that Southeastern had a target of 2.5% unpaid fares. But there was no source or date for this target. And by it's nature, fare dodging is impossible to accurately measure. I'm making a big assumption when I say I believe SE does know the extent of fare...

Southeastern revenue staff making an appearance

Not empowered to tackle double-gaters - that's damning, isn't it? I can see how they would want to avoid gateline staff getting into physical trouble. So those staff seem to be there to cover SE for claims that travellers were injured in the gates or could not exit the station, even though they...

Southeastern revenue staff making an appearance

Now that the map issue has been resolved, we can get back to the business of the thread. I'm very sceptical about qualitative experience as a way of understanding the fare dodging problem, but this thread has taught me a thing or two about the issue and the problems SE faces, and the choices it...

Manchester Oxford Road - low platforms

This would be massively expensive! Why spend money when MOR already has four through platforms? MOR is beautiful and unique; there is no other station like it in the UK. It reminds me of Sydney Opera House. It's a beautiful and intelligent solution to a demanding site; the arches beneath the...

Southeastern revenue staff making an appearance

The original poster claimed I don't see any evidence from him linking fare evasion to poverty. the link you provides is very interesting and sparked a lot of thought for me. Thank you. First, the LM press release is about violent crime, and the issue here is not violent crime but fare evasion...
