“New research shows passengers wasting money by booking late”

An LNER led PR piece here. I’ve not posted it in the LNER section because this might be one for wider debate about people seemingly not wishing to book too far in advance for their train travel. Me too. One of the benefits of rail travel over – say - air travel, and one which makes it more...

    TrainSplit - only seat reservation?

Just checking if TrainSplit has seat reservation only capability a la GWR. Unfortunately although I usually buy from TS my current tickets are pre purchased for travel on Friday for work. I understand that there are costs involved for TS without an actual ticket sale which is why it may not...

Clearing the Air - RDG Report

RDG (rail delivery group) appear to have produced some new research which even tries to win on price. https://www.raildeliverygroup.com/uk-rail-industry/clearingtheair.html...

TfL Oyster and Contactless app (iOS)

I can no longer sign into this app. Having checked on the iOS App Store, not only can I see no update, the app fails to appear at all. This was never exactly the best app – it was always unreliable. But to now not seem to be able to use it at all is appalling! If those who have made the...

TfL Oyster account can provide a weekly Journey History email, but can this be delivered for Contactless?

I was trying to set up a friend’s TfL contactless account. They wanted to be able to receive the same weekly pdf email which I do (I use Oyster) showing my journey history and costs. This does not appear to be possible for Contactless cards. Or can I just not see it?

    Misleading from LNER

Looked up a journey on LNER. Might go back to book it. Received an email saying (I’ve anonymised it - my bold) A majority of ‘other’ retailers charge no booking fee. This suggests LNER are the only one that does not. Is this misleading? Better would be - unlike some retailers, we don’t...

CONFIRMED - Tube fares frozen until March 2025

I know there’s an election and I know this potential plan will attract the usual critics. But here’s hoping it may happen. With all the doom from LNER………. the £2 England bus cap, Scotrail off peak prices all day and possibly this, it’s good to see some passenger friendly decisions being...

LNER AI trial - fishing expedition or intelligence led?

LNER is using AI to detect fare evasion. Interesting article below. By the use of AI in this way, is it a fishing expedition or based on previous intelligence? Chunk of article follows but this line is the reason for asking the above question. How many accounts of perfectly compliant...

Good and straightforward solution from SWR.

My mistake. I bought an Off-peak day single on paper through the SWR app when what I actually wanted was on Off-peak day return. There was noone to ask to be able to excess it when I noticed my mistake (ticket office shut) so for 10p more I bought an Off Peak day return from the machine...

This screen gave me a headache

I found this screen rather interesting. Yes it provides important information re wheelchair, cycle and first class etc, but the layout and information delivery, as per title, gave me a headache! It was also not on screen for very long. (Actually I already had a headache but you get the...

    Disappointing London Overground

Unusual for Tf (I think) London Overground has rail replacement buses scheduled today (Sunday 8/10/2023) in the timetable (and displayed at stations and on apps) between Gunnersbury and Camden Road. See image below. My planned journey today (planned last night) is between West Hampstead...

    Fares inflation (Travelcard / Cap)

I watched an episode of the excellent Secrets of the London Underground. It contained an item of history suggesting that - in 1988 - the cost of an adult one day all zone Travelcard was £2. The current actual price for purchase in 2023 is £14.90 (1-6 cap) £15.20 (Off peak Travelcard 1-6)...

RRB (Rail replacement bus) - operator decision

Looking at live departures today, the RRB between New Cross Gate and West Croydon - via Brockley, Honor Oak Park, Forest Hill, Sydenham, Crystal Palace, Anerley, Norwood Junction, Selhurst and West Croydon - is listed as being operated by Southern. This surprised me because - although there is...

Caught out by TfL pink reader inconsistency

Made the following journey today. Hendon Central to Hammersmith (Picc / District line) (avoiding Zone 1) Travelled Hendon Central – Camden Town – Camden Road - Gunnersbury (pink reader) - Hammersmith. Was charged via Zone 1. Having called the helpdesk to enquire about this charge, they...

    Wrong roundel

TfL usually has such clear signage and has very strict guidelines in order to keep signage effective, clear and consistent. Am I the only one who thinks the below is crazy? West or East Croydon is the next station. Yet - at the platform at Norwood Junction - a number of roundels are branded...

    Service curtailed (or was it?)

Yesterday, a colleague took the following itinerary: 1015 London Bridge -> Haywards Heath (1059) 1115 Haywards Heath -> Brighton (11.27) At Three Bridges, the in car train announcements made clear that the train terminates here, passengers should alight, and on the platform the external facing...

Tickets can’t be sold - unreasonable?

Want to travel Waterloo East to Bedford. Online (I’ve tried LNER and Trainline) no tickets can be sold. Is the route Waterloo East -> London Bridge -> Bedford so unreasonable? Is it going too far one way and therefore circuitous? The only other two options I can see are walking to either...

TOCs 'have begun barring ticket office staff from selling advanced fares' (Northern trial)

I cannot see this on here but apologies to the mods if it's already been posted. This is rather disappointing, especially with a number of TOCs now offering Advance Tickets on the Day (APOD) where - if the article is true - those choosing a ticket office during the trial will risk being...

Major problems out of Waterloo this evening (20/4/23) and South Western mainline/Cross Country

It’s unusual for SWR to say it will affect services until the end of the day at this time of night. Apparently Basingstoke was deluged with police and air ambulance. I don’t know any more and no specific information as to the cause has yet been provided...
